What the hell just happened?

I just opened my case up to change the fans on top of my rad as (i've posted earlier in the forum) my Yate loons were extremely noisy. So I just found some old ones to try and see what temp difference i'd get. When I opened the case I realised the water in my res was a little low as I hadn't topped it up since it was bled. Now when I went to open the res the whole thing just overflowed. Now I don't know if this is normal but it's never happened to me before. Could I have punctured the rad when changing the fans or has it just overflowed due to the pressure change when opening the res?

Thanks, Joe

If you can see the holes, ie theyre on the outer portion of the tube and not too far down the sides where the fins are.
also assuming your rad is copper/brass then the holes are easily soldered up.

Its an EK rad which im guessing is copper/brass by looking at it. The holes are in a slightly awkward place due to them being under the pilot holes for the fans. My computer was turned off at the time, thank god, but not at the wall. I took a action-movie-style dive for the switch on the psu. None of the components got water on them until I moved the rad out where my sound card got wet and so did the psu. Im guessing these will be fine however, as there was no power through them at the time and there wasn't a huge amount of it. I'll post back when i've found out.

Its just the accessibility to get a decent sized soldering iron in there, other wise its a simple enough repair. Clean off the paint from a few mm around the hole with 400 grit wet and dry, apply a little flux, heat with a soldering iron, feed in the solder (flux cored), just enough to flow around the hole and leave like a smartie shaped dome over the hole. job done :).

As for your sound card, rinse with distilled or de-ionised water then leave on a warm radiator for 6 hours to dry completely. should be fine

Soldering iron isnt going to be a possibility by the looks of it so i'm going for some Plastic Padding Leak Fix Bonding glue which should do the trick, just cleaning the area around it is going to be so awkward.

Stuffing epoxy towards the hole is a fairly legitimate approach, otherwise soldering via a blowtorch should simplify access. Use shorter screws next time :)

For that 120MM area of the case i use two longer screws and two shorter ones and when I was changing the fans I didn't even think about it. Very silly.

This is the sort of event used by people to argue against water-cooling yet the event was completely caused by PEBKAC :)

(We've all done similar things. 99% of computer problems are caused by the people who use them.)

Yeah I agree, to be honest, i'm surprised this is the first thing i've damaged the amount of messing around I do with it :D
