Anti Virus - Buy or Free version? Advice appreciated

I am one of those guilty of using Free (AVG) Antivirus software.
Should I pay for better soaftware and can you recommend any free or reasonably priced Anti-Virus software? One that doesnt seem to take over or slow a PC down too much if possible.

I have never (touch wood) Suffered any problems but as I will be building my new (i7/Windows 7 x64 Home Premium) system shortly I thought I should check with the experts.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials - it's free, and it's the majority recommendation on these forums:

100% agree with this... I have tried / tested several FREE anti-viruses and found this one to be the best, especially with Win 7

Yea no need to pay for a thing.

I personaly use comodo firewall and avg as protection... but other mention microsoft security essentials and windows firewall as well.

Any such combination will be fine.
