Hey guys,

A friend of mine is in need of a new laptop, and has asked me to find her one. The only criteria is that it's as light as possible, with a decent screen size. So I'm thinking 13.3-14 inch if possible. It'll be used for emails, web browsing, watching movies etc. £600 is the absolute maximum. It probably wouldn't go amiss if it looked nice too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

HP dv3.
HP dm4.
Samsung Q330.
Samsung Q430.
Sony Vaio E 14.
Toshiba Satellite R630.
Lenovo Edge 14.
Lenovo Edge 13.
Dell Vostro.
More that I can't think of (I know MSI has a few portable models).

Some of them (HPs, Dell, Sony) should be available to check out in local shops.

Cheers, thanks for such a big list :)

To be fair, there are quite a lot of machines that would fit your requirements. Also, a lot of 13'' wont have an optical drive.

What you seek is basically an Apple Macbook 13 equivalent.

I've seen some dv3-2310ea for under £600. There aren't that many reviews around but the specs are good. Good processor, good graphics card (and it supports switchable graphics), big battery, light weight (although not super light). Looks are subjective, but it is not a plastic box. Apparently has a touch screen as well.

That'd be the closest to your requirements I suppose, but can't say about the machine itself.
