Nothing of great importance, merely wanted to post my results with the following:

Phenom II X2 Dual Core 555 BE plus Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H 760G

Changed:

ECC Firmware to to Hybrid
ACC to Auto

Kept crashing during windows (XP Pro 32bit) loading screen.

Disabled each core (except core 0 which cannot be disabled) and found that core 1 was the dodgy one.

With that disabled, got into windows, ran IBT a few times and no issues.

Shows as a "Phenom II X4" with three enabled cores now.

Worth the punt, bought this lot as a decent upgrade for a HP Pavillion t660.uk (Pentium 4) system.

By which I mean emptying the case and refilling it.

General family use so low noise > overclocking but the extra unlocked core is nice to have :)

I had tried wobbling the ACC about but no difference.

Haven't done anything else, been busy installing a new OS, software, updates and I'm still here transferring files over.

May try again later but if the fourth is too sketchy to work under standard settings it's probably not worth my while.

Mate of mine recently unlocked a new X2 to use all four cores. No need to change anything in Bios as his ASUS mobo did it all for him (he just had to press one key on boot).
Runs stable through Prime and IBT. Hell of a way to get a quad core for dirt cheap!

Just look at the specs. Asus, AsRock, Gigabyte, Jetway, msi and biostar all allow unlocking on some boards. Of those, Asus, AsRock and gigabyte are the most versatile as they allow selective unlocking of individual cores and at least some boards have decent power regulation. For the best options, look for 140w CPU support and 8+2 or more power phase regulation.

Unlocked chips can be rather unpredictably power hungry and some motherboards just won't take it. I've heard of a few 4+1 phase MSI deaths and I've had a 6+1 phase Jetway board die (although I think it may have been more to do with running RAM faster than the board's spec rather than unlocking).

ASRock said:
- Support for Socket AM3 processors: AMD Phenom™ II X6 / X4 / X3 / X2 (except 920 / 940) / Athlon II X4 / X3 / X2 / Sempron processors
- 6-Core CPU Ready
- Supports UCC feature (Unlock CPU Core)
- Advanced V8 + 2 Power Phase Design
- Supports CPU up to 140W

- Supports AMD's Cool 'n' Quiet Technology
- FSB 2600 MHz (5.2 GT/s)
- Supports Untied Overclocking Technology
- Supports Hyper-Transport 3.0 (HT 3.0) Technology

so i should be good to try and unlock my X2 555 BE when it arrives today? or can i pop my mobo, dont wanna do that :(

That should be fine. I have heard of an 8+2 phase ASRock deteriorating badly after overclocking an X6 and then being finished off by an unlocked X2 -> X4. The damage was probably done by that point though.

Just don't go too crazy on the voltages.
