I'm still on 10.4

driver problem

ive never had any issues with ati drivers untill the new control center drivers.i get a gpu 2 load of 99% on my 5850 crossfire setup at idle with the 11.1 11.2s and 10.12...ive rolled back to 10.10s and the problem is sorted.i have tried a custom install on the new ccc drivers not installing AVIVO etc just drivers and the problem persists....the issue is random usually after playing a media file or game...i googled it and lots of people are having the same problem.

Tempting fate :)

Not really, I don't have an ATI GPU at the moment and it doesn't look like i'll have one again this year (unless you include a possibility of a small Bobcat rig).

As for nVidia drivers, well that's a whole different story. But things are working well at the moment.

You don't need to update your drivers if the one you're using is working well.

It surprising how many people apply this logic, despite months notes listing changes outside of gaming people might use, but then reading is overrated . Gpu acceleration in things like flash*, vlc, browsers; bluray support and tweaks, 3d, opengl (es) on top of reams of bug fixes and performance gains (for cod etc.) as well as things like mlaa and tessellation controls. If what the op has said is true, then he tried twice and gave up what, 6 months ago at least? Uninstall, reboot, install new, reboot.

The number of people that don't bother uninstalling the old ones, or even resetting their settings, makes up the majority of solved problems you know.

*10.6 added this, and I cannot see any logical reason for not using gpu for H.264

I have a question regarding this actually.

I only ever download the display driver, and upuntill now it has served me well.

However, I noticed that there is such a thing as the OpenCL driver, which I know is used for accelerating stuff on the gpu.

However considering I only instal the display driver and not the catalyst control center suite, is flash (amongst other things including vlc) not being accelerated using my gpu?

If you don't install the ccc then you simply can't control anything :) If you're happy with amd default values then that's fine, it handles flash etc. It's worth installing opencl even if you don't use the ccc.

Opencl is installed by default because it's becoming more common. Unlike cuda it runs on pretty much everything - amd, nvidia, intel, arm etc. which is one of the main reasons most mobile apps use it and it's creeping out into browsers, things like blender which isn't surprising considering it costs nothing. Nvidia might push cuda heavily (purely profit ofc) but it should really be left to scientific calculations imo.

cod 1 and uo have a thing with ati drivers tha why he asked ;)

i found only 10.4 to work with newer ati cards like your on.

apparently the newest ati drivers have solved this will report back and tried uo

yes it works with newest ati no more messing about !

That's why I ended the sentence "if it's working well".
