Can I drive my parents car?

On my motor policy as well it says I am insured to drive any privately insured motor car. (providing certain other criteria are met also)

Does a privately insured van class as a motor car ?

I remember when I was 17, and all our cars (Mine, my mums and dads) were all insured on CIS any driver policies!

Cracking value for money they were and then like everything else that's good it got stopped!

Get your parents to find out how much extra it would cost to get you added to their policy.

My mum just sets me as a named driver for all her cars

If in any doubt, ring your insurance company. Any loophole will result in massive points and fines. As it is still driving without insurance.

I'm going to say no, mainly because the circumstance where you would be insured is so rare.

Some policies have a clause which allows other drivers to drive a car with the owners permission and have 3rd party cover. These policies usually stipulate that the other driver be older than 25. Even if this is the type of cover your parents have and you're old enough, it's only 3rd party cover, so if you crash your parents have to buy a new car.

Who is to know who you are when you are driving it, you go out and drive. Just take it easy and don't look suspicious, If you get stopped do the following:

a) pretend to be your father
b) offer the police officer a bribe
c) start a chase with the police, with the cut backs they will not be able to follow you for too long

If you have to ask you probably can't as your parents would have to have specifically taken out an any driver policy which isn't a mainstream offering.

Only know one person with such a policy which is my boss and I expect he pays a good premium for it too. Still won't let me near his car mind you.

I think every insurance company now say you need to be 25 before they will give you third party cover on a fully comp policy to drive other peoples vehicles. My fully comp cover used to be very easy to miss-interpret too as it would list everything that's part of the particular fully comp package (which would include driving other peoples cars) on one piece of paper, then on a 2nd piece of paper it would list everything that is included that I'm entitled too (which said I'm not allowed to drive other peoples cars).

Also this might be worth noting. I believe there is a new DVLA law that appeared in January stating that every car that is taxed must be insured by the registered keeper. if it's not covered by any insurance policy the car needs to be sorn'd or you'll receive a fine.
