Well im now the proud owner of my first android phone which i love. Cant believe how clever these things are but i guess ive only scratched the surface so far.

The thing is though the battery life is pants. Not even lasting a day. OK yes im fiddlin with it a fair bit but not all the while. Which free (numpty friendly) apps are out there which can help? Ive already sussed that turning off wi fi helps but any other advise on this matter would be great.

Also i need another mains charger. Do i risk phone damage with the cheapy ones off flee bay rather than another htc two piece one which obviously are more expensive?

Thanks in advance Rob

You don't really need an app.

I turn off WiFi, Bluetooth, and the data connection, and only use the data connection (2G/3G when it is required), and I don't have auto sync turned on in the settings. Get at least a day out my battery that way (Desire).

My HTC desire is flashing away to be charged right now, it's almost as bad as my N95

Still, you can get one and a half, perhaps two days from it by turning off wifi, turning the screen down, turn off auto sync as mentioned.

Myself I invested in a spare battery which allows me to watch videos on my commute without having to worry.

I would never buy a cheap charger again since the last one blew up in a shower of sparks. The good thing about buying a spare charger now is that because of micro usb, the chances are it will work on your next phone.

just buy up a load of micro usb cables, have one at every PC you're likely to use throughout your day (home PC, work PC, one in your bag with your laptop.. assuming you're a geek :p)

Easiest way to do it.

I can go just over a day now with normal usage, 3G on all the time, wifi takes over when at home, couple of calls, lots of texts and light browsing.

Turn off "Automatic" in date / time settings. Massive battery saver :)

Really? Why is this, I thought it would only update once a day or something like that? How much of a difference did it make to you?

I have it on and get a day easy. That's also with moderate browsing, few calls, texts, sync on, Wifi on, Data on.

Can't imagine how awesome the Atrix would be with its huge battery (compared to the Desire) :O

As above, just buy a few micro USB cables :)

In terms of an App that can help extend your battery life, look at JuiceDefender, and also the paid add on to it called UltimateJuice!, which will give you a lot of options to help save some battery by auto-disabling some stuff until you need to use it. I find it's helped me a lot.

Don't know what you lot are doing to get less than a day
I've had mine a few months now & average a couple of days if needed although I have multiple charging options mains/PC/car charger so it's never a problem to charge it.
I have widgets on a home screen for wifi/bluetooth & nothing is on auto, I really don't see the need to use auto when one tap on a widget activates what ever you want when it's actually needed.

so you dont have auto checking of emails? How do you know when to check your emails unless you have auto push to mind enabled :p

I too only ever get a day from my HTC Desire absolute max, by far the biggest cause is "Cell Standby", no idea what to do to help it

You sure of this? This signal is sent to all phones as part of the network version of Network Time Protocol, I highly doubt this is going to result in "massive" savings.

Its the 2G/3G listener service, your connection to the network so to speak that is always on (if you really want to know wikipedia CDMA for the 3G version).
