...and I'm thinking of getting a Orange San Francisco! hear me out :)

I currently have a Nokia E51 and I'm sick and tired of the web experience being pathetic. My ex had a G1 and I had a good play with it (the phone :p) and it was OK but nothing special, however I've heard Android has matured a lot since then. I'm thinking of getting the OSF because it's cheap, will tide me over until the big players have their behemoths out in the summer, and I can see how I like Android before I drop £500+ on a phone as I'm willing to consider the iPhone 5 too.

I'll freely admit that my knowledge of smartphones is quite limited so I'm asking the experts of OcUK if this makes sense?

I'm after a San Fran too, as my iPhone 3GS is still worth quite a lot and I'd like to get cash for it while I still can.

The San Fran looks good for the cash, win of a plan.

seems a good idea...whats the worst that could happen :D
the max You'd lose is £50 selling it off

...or keep it and use it as a 3G wifi modem :D

By summer phones like the LG 2x will be £250 on the bay, no point dropping £500+ on a new android if your worried about money.

id rather have a lower powered cpu running at 1.8x the clock speed, or a cpu able to do twice as much per cycle running at the same speed....

two cpu's is what you do when you cannot crank the clock up without increasing cost / generating too much heat / drawing too much power

It seems like a good idea- purely to try out Android, maybe have a go at rooting the phone/installing custom ROMs - or even just trying something like LauncerPro to get an idea of how much you can customise most android phone before laying down big money on a high end smartphone.

I'm going to be upgrading in the summer (when my 24month contract with my HTC Hero runs out) and it's gonna be a nice upgrade :)

Cheers guys, seems to have validated my thinking so far :)

It's not so much the money but I don't want to have the hassle of buying an Android only to find I don't get on with the OS and then sell it get an iphone.

I'm not particularly mega focussed on having 2 cores it's just kind of the next big milestone, maybe I should have said "next generation" but most people got it anyway :)

Definately :) I intend to have a good mess around, rooting it and trying all the different flavours of ROM, they seem to be updated weekly which is no bad thing :)

That's exactly what I'm doing.
My contract runs out next month so I'll go to a rolling 30 day and see what takes my fancy in the next few months.

I'm really quite impressed with my sanfran. For £100 you can't go far wrong.

This pretty much what I'm thinking of doing.

My N900 runs on a rubbish OS with no official, and limited community, support. So I'm thinking I should get an Orange SF, unlock it, use my contract sim in it until I am due an upgrade in 8 months or so. Then I get to play with Android and perhaps use a phone which doesn't irritate the **** out of me :D

My only concern is that I know bugger all about phones and PAYG, so I'm not sure if I can get the Orange PAYG deal and then never ever top it up again (after I've unlocked it and put my Vodafone sim in it)...

I don't think it should be a problem, there's no contract or obligation so you should be able to do as you please.

I'm planning on keeping the SIM so I can use it the few weeks a year when I'm back in the UK, will help me avoid roaming call costs and data charges :)

Exactly what I've done. chose Dolphin with the 100mb/month free, Used about £5 of the PAYG keeping the rest for Orange Wednesdays. Popped my contract sim in, added a data package to my contract and I'm off and running.

Ok, that's allayed my concerns (between the two of you!). Now all I need to do is get my sister in law (who works for Orange) to buy the phone and get me a discount :D
