It time for me to buy a new PSU as the "temp" one I have had has been in for over a year.

I am stuck between Corsairs AX 850 and HX 1000

It will be powering

i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz
EX58 UD5
6Gb Ram
1TB Hard drive
SLI 480

The case is a Cosmos S with Custom loop for cpu only

Which one would you choose and why

Cheers

P.S. I want a PSU that will last me a good few years and probably will power an ivy bridge setup later on next year

Well whats your budget? If you can spare a bit more go for the AX1200, and be worry free for the next 3-4 years of upgrades. (lol probably streching it)

Both have excellent efficiency, but despite the HX 1000W being around £30 I would still choose it.

1. It's modular, and I like the look of it, although just realised the 850W is also modular...

2. It's 150W more, and would be an advantage for future upgrades, where more things are becoming power hungry.

3. If you want, there's a B-Grade HX 1000W on OCUK which is £10 more than the new version... So you know i'd choose that :P (OCUK needs to take a look at that)

I wouldn't want to spend to much more than the HX 1000W, I have looked at the AX1200 and thought that it was a bit overkill and a little more than I would want to spend. The AX850 has a fully modular design and is more energy efficient whereas the HX is more powerful and I guess will last longer with future upgrades.

Well that review from hardocp was only bad one i've seen out of about 10....it's strange though because the other reviews say it can handle 1k watt output whereas that one doesn't maybe they got a dodgy one?:p

HardOCP was just more brutal with the temperature, which it could probably handle if the OTP trip point wasn't as low as it is, which is pretty high at 40C. I'd say if you were mounting the Antec High Current Gamer 900W in the bottom of the case where it doesn't have to deal with the heat from CPU and GPUs then it will be fine.

Seeing as everyone else is throwing 850W PSUs in here, I'll throw in the Antec High Current Pro 850W, which is 80Plus Gold, modular and probably would pass HardOCP testing.
