Hello there

my current foxconn motherboard is pretty useless and I would like to upgrade, my cpu is amd phenom 1090t x 6. I have 4 gig 1300 ram, crucial 6/g ssd etc.

I am looking at the Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX board, it ticks all the boxes for me. I see that it has had some amazing reviews, just wanted to check if there were any other boards that I should consider?

thanks for your help.

Barny

crosshair V and its competitor msi will show its 990FX motherboards in CES thats in March 1~5 i believe and they gonna be released soon after.

the new Crosshair V (AMD 990FX ) for AM3+ Bullzdor-based that would be very expensive once it sell into online store market - I own Crosshair FIV with 1100T that pretty good run all way and Im happy with it also glad got one... I would save up some money for the next one with new AM4 due in the future. I would say this motherboard is good to buy and it has good review plus some award. The reason for future new AM4 are new DDR4 RAM and may install new SSD slot for hard drive instead of SATA ports that why I would think there may new techonogly for the future to make easier and smaller size of hard drive and big question is the graphic card that may using chipset processor like CPU with heatsink but that just think to build up new system - just watch for the next few years but the AM4 will come out 2-4 years time as DDR4 will be release somewhere from 2012 or later. One thing is the new AM3+ is not support USB3.0 from chipset that what I read some news - wonder why it not included but wait until the new mobo is release and see the spec first.

lol - No such thing as the Crosshair V yet. To be honest the Crosshair IV is overkill for most people - Only consider it if you want the following:

A)- Extreme Overclocking (Read LN2 etc)
B)- Crossfire setup

Otherwise you'd be better off saving your money for now with a cheaper 890-chipset based board, as once the AM3+ stuff is released you'll be wanting one of them! ;)

Don't get me wrong - its a beautiful board and if you insist on nothing but the best it won't dissapoint - just a bit pricey for my liking (I'm a tad pee'd off BD won't work on it) - I like it so much that I'm going to refuse upgrading to BD until the next gen stuff is out supporting AM4 (as mentioned above)

Is that right that it doesn't support Blu ray? I just bought and installed my crosshair iv formula in the last couple of days and haven't tried any movies yet. If it is right I'm gonna be devastated!!

Phew!! Thanks for that, i was panicking there lol.

@barnsta, the board is great so far, i would definitely recommend it.

lol, I had to think when I first read it to! :p

DaveGTY, does your NB run hotter than your SB, mines 10deg hotter and I read somewhere that some of these boards had issues with the NB heatsinks not making full contact with the NB chip, risers too long apparently?

The NB does run slightly warmer. NB 34c to SB 31c so i don't think it's an issue.

That's according to PC Probe II which was on the MB disc. What temp programme are you using as PC Probe is showing a different temp for the CPU to Core Temp so it may be a dodgy reading?

I'll have a look at PC Probe II to see what it says, as the readings for the NB & SB I took were from the BIOS.

Can I ask you what temps for NB & SB are shown in your BIOS then compare them to the temps shown in PC Probe II? As your 3degs difference isn't much but mine is 10degs off, would hamper and over clocking I might want to do!

I'm at work atm but i'll have a look at the temps tonight and let you know

Hi Space Monkey,

Well i've checked in the BIOS and there's a slight difference, BIOS shows NB is 39c and SB 33c, PC Probe shows NB 38c and SB 33/34c.

Dunno if it makes a difference but i've got a Noctua C14 CPU cooler which has 2 x 140mm fans, push/pull, blowing onto the mobo. I meant to help with lower mobo temps according to the blurb but probably not the difference between the NB/SB temps.

You've got me thinking now though, do you know if the NB/SB should both be a similar temp?

:)

If there was a problem with the northbridge cooler not making contact - you'd know about it fellas - Your temps would be up in the 50's (This only affected the first couple of batches of this board). Asus sorted it eventually- As i returned my first one (purchased about a month after it was launched), waited a couple of months then got it again - glad I did as I didn't suffer the earlier issues which couldn't be resolved by BIOS updates - i.e. Chipset cooling and fluctuating FSB (I'm talking fluctuating by 20-30Mhz instead of just 2-3Mhz).

If you've bought it - yu won't regret this board - I love mine to bits ;)

Yes it has a slightly hotter chipset than the other 890 series boards but its rated to handle upto 60Degrees C+!!!
