Hi all

Got my PS3 on launch date and its paint job is getting a little shabby now. Looking to pick up some spray paint and give it the once over. Just wondering if anyone can steer me in the right direction as to what I need.

I take it i'll be needing primer, the colour and a clear coat.

Should I look specifically towards plastic primer or just any one should do?
Also, is the clear coat really necessary? I'm not going for a metallic colour and the console won't be getting touched all that much.

Probably looking to order the stuff from the rainforest so if anyone knows any particularly good brands I should keep my eyes out for, please do post ahead.

Cheers :)

If your spraying plastic, then yes you will need plastic primer.
If you just use normal primer then the paint will be much more likely to chip and flake off.

Use laquer if its required by the colour coat your applying.
Most paints now will probably require it tbh, and if you dont use it the paint will look dull.

Make sure you key the plastic of the ps3 so the primer gets a good grip to it. I don't know what PS3's look like but if there are any shiney / gloss bits of plastic and you don't key them then it will flake off.

Yes the ps3 is quite glossy so I will have to look into keying the plastic. Found some plastic primer and glossy clear coat.

Theres not that much choice as of brands but this one seems to make decent colours. The paint says its compatible with any kinds of varnish so I presume it just means any clear coat.

Heres a pic to show how shiny the ps3 is

I have never bothered with plastic primer myself I always ensure to key the surface first and if its badly scratched etc filler primer is nice and give a good base and removes any small imperfections.

The clearcoat will make the paint more durable.

You may be fine with normal primer, but when its the same sort of price as plastic primer why bother taking the risk? I have seen several plastic car parts that have chipped easily or flaked and lifted due to the wrong primer being used.

Fair enough, a ps3 sitting on a shelf etc won't get anywhere near the same level of abuse as a car bumper for example, but as I say, why take the risk for no cost difference?
