I have for the past few months got quite severe lower back pain whilst running, within about 5 minutes of starting any run I am too uncomfortable to continue. I can sometimes "stretch it out" and others I cant, have had it happen in the past where I managed to get rid of the pain on just one side.

This doesnt happen whilst running on grass (soft surface).

Given the above information I have sort of narrowed it down to some sort of shock absorptin causing it. I have running shoes that are for me (ie ran on treadmill to correct pronunciation etc) have even been out and bought new ones thinking that my old ones being damaged was the cause but it doesnt appear to be the case.

I work in an office and as such am seated for most of the day.
I also lift weights on alternate days to my cardio. (always keeping to correct technique etc.)

I don't know quite what to do from here, perhaps a trip to a physio would be beneficial. But knowing a root cause and where to start digging would probably be wiser.

Also worth noting that after approx 30 minutes running on grass/fields I managed to run at least 1/2 mile on tarmac with no ill effects, which leads me to believe that it is just muscular pain due to me not stretching enough before hand.
Are there any particular stretches that I should do that may help prevent this happening ?

sorry if this post is a bit all over the place was trying to get all info down on screen as it popped into my head.

James.

Might get closed as a medical thread but I get a similar thing when riding my bike.

Sometimes my lower back - just above my ass starts hurting after a while, same happens if I do a lot of pushing - such as pushing a wheelbarrow around.

I've done a bit of research and it could be down to weak gluteus maximus muscles (ass muscles!) from sitting down all day, other muscles get more developed which puts pressure on the lower back.

You can do exercises to improve it, but I would really seek the help of a professional.

Since starting my teaching course I have found it decrease quite a lot as I am stood up most of the day.

I was getting back pain when running for a quite a while as well and I thought it was due to a few rough tumbles whilst snowboarding.

Mine was around the centre lower back. Went to the docs and they referred me to an NHS osteopath. Had noticeable difference after the first two sessions.

When giving me an assessment he told me my back was just too tense, a lot of tight muscles etc so he worked those out and done a few back crunches on me to loosen my spine up and all has been well since. I had about 4 or 5 appointments tops. So a trip to the physio should do the trick too if its anything like my problem.

If you are a member of a running club, try and find out if the club has any links with osteopaths of physio's where you can get a discount. They usually charge a fair amount and I've heard of some clubs getting like 20% discounts if they're a member of the club.

Do you deadlift during your weight lifting? If not it might help, I had problems with the lower back until I strengthened it up a bit.

Glute activation exercises might help before hand.

This, 100x this... I get all my back pain from tight glutes & hammys (and the related posture).. doing a few of these as well as for my hip flexors makes a huge difference for me :)

Had similar pain.

Lie on your front with arms by your side and lift your head / shoulders / moobs as far as you can off the ground. You will feel the same muscles being worked that are sore.
Do this for as long as you can before you go out running / when is convenient to try and strengthen the muscles.

Running is overrated anyway,it probably doesn't suit you! Pump iron instead.
Restrict your running to just when being chased by the cops.

Go straight to a Chiropractor, don't bother with NHS... the chiro will tell you exactly whats wrong and if its anything to do with your body
