It says on realoem what the relays are for:

1 For vehicles with DME
2 For vehicles with Automatic transmission suitable only for reversing light
3 FOR RELIEF OF IGNITION COIL
4 only applies to WIPE SYSTEM

Full of fuses and relays iirc. Had a 530d in at work a couple of years ago that stopped dead a few miles after having a new diesel pump fitted, there was a blown fuse in that box...don't ask me how long it took to find, seeing as its not listed on Autodata (not at the time anyway) at all!!!.

There are 2 fuse boxes yeah, one is there, the other is through the flip down panel in the glove box!

DME = ECU for petrol cars. DDE = ECU for diesel cars I believe.
