could be because some people have to work through the night to refill the shelfs and stuff

In supermarkets that may be true, as they have people in 24/7 working, though if my old place of work was anything to go by, the minute the last customer is out the door 90% of the lights are switched off! :p

I am always seeing other stores in town that are lit up like a christmas tree with no one there. Clothes stores, banks, estate agents etc.

Because energy is finite and as it is used it pushes prices up for everyone.
and there's also the CO2 (if you're interested in that)

And is it the shops fault that our government has failed to build nuclear?

Energy is finite? Maybe coal is yeah.

But mainly, I think, because the people in control of the fuels just want more money.

Is global warming still a thing?

Most do it, so you can see displays, and so if somebody does break in there is enough light for the cameras to get a good picture.

I do believe it is stupid, and they should be targetted to bring there energy consumption down.
Although most companys will be trying their hardest to do it anyway since it does save money.
The company i work for has saved £35,000 over a year just by turning down the air con, making staff turn off every light when a room is not in use, having minimal lights on until opening etc etc, although that 35k is over 18 centres :O

This is something that always annoys me. The general public is always moaned at to save energy but a lot of businesses waste so much!

I did a contract at the Jaguar plant in Liverpool a few years back and they were excellent for energy saving. Whenever the workers were on their 15min breaks or lunch hour etc, all of the main lights across the shop floor would turn off. It was quite cool walking between all the robots as they did their thing in the dark! The workers were always told to turn off lights and printers when they left the rooms and there were notices up all over the place about it!

When it comes to taxing us it is. Although they're calling it "climate change" now, seeing as we're getting colder not warmer. It's a good job they're working from reliable long term statistics....

Hmm energy isnt infinite though is it? though it will never run out...but hang on isnt that some peoples definition of infinite? :D

Energy is not infinite as there is a finite amount of energy and mass in the universe ... BUT in our time/frame of reference you may as well assume that it is

£1M a quarter energy bill!
And if you had a higher demand you'd be running the factory 24/7 :)

Yes the saving is tidy, but it is something that companies only do because it is easy, they want to be seen as green, or because they need to penny pinch

It was implied that the energy we have can "run out", not that the universe doesn't contain enough. Fossil fuels can run out, yes, that's what I meant.

You can use infinite and finite in terms of time as well, but hang on some peoples definition of infinite only covers mass? ;):D
