Unlocked 6950 and warranty

Does unlocking the shaders on the 6950 void the warranty? In particular the MSI model on the weekend deal?

technically yes, but the more pertinent question is will they find out, as long as you can re-flash the original bios before an RMA then it should all be good.

Wonder how well the Frozr versions are selling if they can't be unlocked like the reference boards??

You probably can unlock them, its just you would need to delve into the BIOS.
