I have reached a stage where the straps have become a necessity doing 240-260lb barbell shrugs. Is there any real point in training the forearms and wrists to enable my grip to cope using the above weight etc or just ignore and carry on as usual (with the straps) until my grip just catches up as a matter of course? Rep range is 12-16 x 4 sets.

Edit: don't use a smith as it assists too much. :D

I find the same problem doing shrugs although I feel its my fingers that tend to completely give way and I dont get on well with straps (rather, I dont feel they help much:eek:)

If you don't feel straps working then your doing it wrong :p

Only started using straps not long ago with heavier movements and help me quite a lot, can't see why you can't keep training your grip but still use them on sets where you struggle.

That's only 100kg or so, you shouldn't need straps just yet let alone hooks :)

Funny you should say that- I'm wondering if it is because of the thickness of the bar? I don't consider myself to have weak wrists.

You're either using the straps wrong or....you're using them wrong!

Fatten the bar up if you want to increase your grip strength. Adopting a 'suicide grip' for any pulling/holding work will help to increase grip strength but you must also train the thumb too by using larger bars.
