Well silly me - the p8p67 does not have an IDE connector. I am connecting my ssd from my previous computer and it BSOD just after windows logo. Apparently this is due to old drivers of the previous board.

So can I buy a USB DVD drive to do a repair of the windows installation or do I have to buy a new sata internal DVD? Does the mobo support boot from USB DVD?

Also it does not seem to register that there are any drives and reboots three times but finds them in the bios menu. I am guessing this will be fixed when I flash the bios with the new version.

What a buggy board ! Half the posts here are about this board. Last time I built a system I did not have to reinstall windows. I do hope this is the only problem I have but somehow doubt it.

Note I just installed new bios via USB stick, nice feature. System still does not acknowledge hard drives on start up screens but shows them in the bios.

Still need to know if I can use a USB DVD drive or if I have to buy a sata DVD drive as mu old ide is not recognised.

You can use a USB drive or better still install your OS via a USB stick. It makes life so much simpler.

How do you get your OS onto to a USB stick?

I used this article, usb drive has to be formatted to a bootable drive and then the contents of the Windows image/dvd copied across, I also included extra applications on mine. Quicker than optical drive no question.

extra info - where F:\ is the usb drive after Windows is transferred.

1. Putting anything in here will make windows transfer it to the root of c drive on installation F:\sources\$OEM$\$1. Do not worry if that folder structure below sources doesn't exist just make it. I put an applications folder here for my various applications I use by default and after installation it is sat there ready for you.

2. Copy your favourites folder here F:\sources\$OEM$\$1\Users\Default\Favorites, again make that structure if it is wanted. After installation your favourites will be installed automatically. Bonus lol.

3. This location, F:\sources\$OEM$\$1\Users\Default\Desktop will transfer anything in there on to the desktop during/after installation ready to use too.

So grab an 8gb key, put your windows on, and the extras we all use as well as your own personal stuff. The possiblities are endless with the USB drive size being the limit really.

One thing is for sure, it is really quick installation time wise and hard to go back to optical after lol.

To be honest you are always going to need an optical drive at some point anyway, and given they cost £15 it's not even worth not having one.

Just installed windows 7 using a USB stick for the first time, I tried the above and find it very handy, I put in my anti virus, gpu driver and a few other drivers etc and all were on my desktop ready to be installed, Love it thanks.

Try setting the P8P67 to IDE mode and see if it will boot up first, then use the AHCI Reg fix and change the bios back to AHCI.

I tried this putting windows on usb stick but once windows got to the part where it exspanded the files and then restarted to carry on installing windows it would just go back to the start again.

Yes that is correct and how it should be. You have to pull the USB stick before the restart happens.

Microsoft have a nice tool that puts your windows 7 disk on a pen drive. If you search on google I am sure you will find it. Got windows 7 on my nice intel penstick now and it is so much better for installing windows.
