Hey forum, just been paid and i'm looking to get a beefy graphics card to destroy Crysis 2 amongst other games. ;)
Now i've been looking to the Gtx 580's and i've come across two that i am interested in, namely:
MSI 580 TWIN FROZR
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-116-MS
&
Gainward 580 "GOOD edition"
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-141-GW

Both very similar cards, which has got me in a pickle, namely, which one performs and cools better. I noticed the core clock is slightly higher on the Gainward but that could be matched with some overclocking to the MSI card. So the question really is which one? Which can cool better and which can overclock stable? :)

(By all means if theres a better 580 out there, suggest it!)

I have been having this thought all night as well. Then I um and ahh whether just splashing out an extra fifty quid for the OcUK GeForce GTX 580 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with that extra VRAM.

What resolution you play at depends if you really need the 3GB edition. anything under 1920*1080 and 1.5gb is more than enough, consider 3GB if you'll be running dual monitors for gaming.

Also, I'd go for the msi out of those two. Better cooling is a must for me.

Both are apparently pretty bloody quiet according to the reviews and the Gainward remains pretty cool but we don't know that chaps set up, so I can't trust that. Wish I could see some temp benchmarks for them both. It all comes down to the sound and temp for me as I aim to Sli and Overclock in the future and would rather that slight edge. What do you guys think?

Edit- Just found a review stating the Gainward runs at 33.0db in 2d mode. WIll report back if I find info on the MSI.

Edit- The description states it is 8.4db below the standard 580 design, so by looking up some benchmarks, when idle the Nvidia GTX 580 had an average of 37.1. So it's pretty bloody close between them sound wise. The Gainward only fails by being 12°C lower than the reference board where the MSI is 19°C . But then again what is 7°C and a few decibels to £33? Gainward it is.

Sorry for the late reply, silly me forgot to post specs, will be running on a 1680 by 1050 resolution. Price isn't a factor for both, its only a few bob. So it looks to be the MSI favoured, tbh I preferred that too, looks to be the better cooling of the two. Thanks for the replies so far guys!

Both card's are so similar they will destroy anything at that resolution. Do you already own a 22" then? I'm going for a 24" myself as I am currently sitting at a 14" CRT. Rocking it old school and I would like to read what is on my screen without squinting. Sometimes I don't know how I used to play 4 player Goldeneye on a telly this size.

Cheapest then get the Accelero XTREME Plus, better than the TWIN FROZR cooler.

I use one and run the core at 900 core 24/7 and it doesnt break 60C under loud and it's completely silent. :)

Sharpiemwt how long do you plan on keeping the 22" screen? GTX580 will be an overkill if and a waste of money if you ask me if your not planning to upgrade in the near future.

Would the 580 come down in price with the impending release of the 590 or will the 590 just be more expensive?

Whats the ideal size as Im planning on a 24" setup with a 580 would this be ok?

Cheers

Yeah our 580s should blitz most games at 1920x1200 on full settings. Should hit around 30fps on intensive games displaying at 2560x1600 so still quite playable for me. I'm used to playing at 30fps with awful graphics so it would be a joy. To be honest I think I'm going serious overkill with the 580 but I just really bloody want one. I keep looking up the 480 and 6950 flashed to 6970 so I can get more bang for my buck and then upgrade say in a year or two when I'm struggling and the new cards are out. I'm so indecisive.

I'll be sticking with the 22 inch ta. And yes the 580 will probably go down in price. Seems ill be going with the msi card after all that I think. :)

True I would save money but what about the performance hit on a 570. Also I'm thinking it may be sensible to wait until the 590s are released. Might see a drop in price then. :)

I was thinking of doing the same sharp, wait for the 590 to come out and you might see a price drop. If not there may be some good deals going as they try and shift some 580 stock cheap as overclockers is doing often at the moment. :)
