Squatters

In other cases - like these students from europe who are just squatting for fun/to party etc.. I'd assume they don't pay for anything, trash the place and just leave it all for the owner to pick up the tab.

Indeed, which is a perfect reason why its not acceptable to simply allow people to "make use of a property" just because its currently "empty", as the owner gets lumped with the payouts.

to be honest id risk 'up to' a 5k fine or an unlikely 6 month sentence for £1 million worth of house

Neighbours have told Mr Hamilton-Brown that squatters forced entry to his property - although it is almost impossible for him to prove in court.

so surely it goes the same the other way ?

i cant imagine many judges or jurys siding with a bunch of foreign soap dodgers in a battle of ''i was here first'' ''no i was here first''

Trouble is I suppose, after 6 months in jail you'd come out to find someone else is now squatting in your house as its been empty for 6 months and you'd have to do the whole thing all over again :D

I may be wrong here but I think the squatters block the doors etc without damaging them -- therefore the bloke cant get in without damaging the SQUATTERS property, which would be illegal (similar to it being illegal to damage a wheel clamp -- and the wheel clamper not technically damaging your car ...).

He can turn off the leccy and water though. And if the squatters ever leave the property unoccupied - storm in there, chuck all the squatters stuff on to the street and game over ...

They can change the locks and simply kicking the doors in will be criminal damage AFAIK - forcing an entry = unlawful eviction if the owner doesn't have a warrant.

You can't just chuck their stuff out either - even if by some miracle they do leave the place briefly and you do manage to regain possession you're not allowed to simply throw all their posessions in a skip etc...

I think the law does need to be tightened - while I think it is cool that some guy in London managed to live in an house for over a decade and claim it as his own I'm less keen on these students/anarchist types just taking over people's homes while they're being renovated and then throwing party's every night

Well it isn't acceptable to damage it at the moment - problem is its rather hard to prove - if 30 hippie types squat your house how can the police charge whoever broke the window or curled one out in the bathroom - couldn't be any of them - tis an impossible situation. We really just need a change in the law where squatting simply has no legal basis as per Scotland.

I concur, squatting is illegal in so many countries, just dont know why we allow it. Should just be illegal unless it is an abandoned or derelict building and even then there should be an official process you go through to gain the building rather than just turning up and busting in.

This happened to a bloke i knew a few years back. He just paid some thugs to go and "have a word".

Problem was soon sorted, and the squatters were politely informed that they would be found where ever they went next and a less polite word would be had if they started any legal trouble. Seemed to work.

The law is crazy when it comes to this kind of thing. They are on his property and wont leave, the police should be able to arrest them for something! its daft.

i'd get down the roughest boxing club/gym i can find in my city pay them all a few hundred quid each to go squat in my house for a day
see if those original squatters still want to play silly buggers :D

if your house is worth a mil surely you can afford to spend a few grand getting some geezers to squat for the night and clear out the other squatters

Ok can someone explain this to me please because I'm completely lost.

1) Chap BUYS this house, with money. He owns the deeds or whatever. It's legally his.
2) Some bums "move in" whilst it is being renovated (and so obviously empty).
3) Chap comes back to house to find said bums now living it up in his house.

How is it now "their" house? How come he/the Police are not allowed to go in and beat the **** out of them?

What retarded law allows people to commandeer someone else's property?

Just sneak in at night, kill them all, put a knife in one of their hands and "return home" the next morning and call the police as it looks like some squatters had a fight and killed each other!

Maybe I watch too many cop Dexter/CSI :p

Unless they change the law I can see some hothead going mad over something like this and killing someone in their house in the future, can you believe they got legal aid to stay in a house they dont own its disgusting.

get a group of people, pre nail some big boards.

At night move in slap boards over ground floor doors and windows an hame the naisl into the frames.

Throw petrol bombs into upstairs windows.

In hindsight they should have paid someone to stay in thier property. I am sure their are companies who specialize in this sort of thing.

No in hindsight the law should have been fixed years ago so when this happened the police just go in remove them and the courts deport the *****ers and put a ban on their re-entry.
