Thoughts on spec for FSX

Hi guys,

I am pricing up a rig for someone that is going to be used solely as a Flight Sim X simulator machine. Can someone please cast their eyes over the below spec and let me know if this will play nice together, or advise on any changes they think relevant etc?:

Can FSX take advantage of hex core? I know it depends on CPU a lot. But if it can't use a hex core. Maybe higher clocked quad core would suit?

Monitor looks ok, but if budget is something that can be pushed here. Get the BenQ 24" LED...

Sandybridge cpu is faster, psu is better.
 
for that amount of money i would switch the mobo and cpu to like a sandy bridge i5 2400 and a decent £100 p67 mobo, would be a lot better for fsx and you would get quite abit of a difference in fps

You want to make sure you have 8GB of Ram if you plan to use lots of addons and high res textures in FSX and FSX only uses 4 cores and the faster the better really. Stulid's system will suit FSX better just as I said 8GB RAM if you intend to use addons and high res textures which stulid's system is only 4GB RAM. Also maybe a graphics card with more memory will be good The asus 480 is a cracking deal at the moment but you will probably need a better PSU then the one Stulid added too. Depends how much you want to spend really and how serious a FSX user you are, would be better to give us an amount you are willing to spend then we can spec you a full system.

Also remember you will want to buy a joystick or a HOTAS system (Hands On Throttle-And-Stick). It all adds up with FSX for the good stuff, not a cheap hobby but lots of fun and have been doing it since 1st MS flight simulator.

that bequiet psu is fine for the system specs.

8gb of ram won't hurt and at current prices is nice to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
 
FSX likes clockspeed and lots of it! It's very CPU dependant, with the GPU not so important. General consensus is it runs a lot better on Nvidia cards than ATI too.

If you can stretch to it, go for an i2500k or i2600k and clock it as far as you can. Have a look at the forums on avsim or suchlike, even an i7 2600k at around 4.8ghz with a Geforce 580 wont run FSX at it's maximum settings.

Have just got a 2500k myself, need to get around to installing, as FSX is pretty much all I use my desktop for (well, that and Football Manager 2011 ;) )

Wow, you serious? Im building my sandybridge rig with fsx playability being one of the biggest objectives. What spec pc on this holy earth will play it at full settings if a 4.8ghz 2600k and gtx 580 wont? Seems a bit insane. How do you think a 4.0ghz 2500k and 1. overlclocked 560 twin frozr 2. SLI gtx 560 would play?

None, but thats more down to the shoddy programming of it than hardware. Obviously the better hardware you can throw at it the better, but there isn't anything about that will run it maxxed out smoothly.

A 2500k and a 560 will be nice, I'm going to a 2500k and GTX 460 myself. Do have a look on Avsim though, as there's a load of tweaks etc you can do which help a hell of a lot. Search for Jesus tweaks or Bojote tweaks.
 
 
Got my 2500k up and running now at 4.2ghz without even trying, simply by changing the multiplier, and had a flight. Seems a lot smoother, looks like a totally worthwhile upgrade.
 
Also, if he could stretch to a 120hz monitor and 3d vision kit he'll be blown away. FSX in 3d is fantastic. Check out overclockers 120hz benq 24 inch monitor. I just upgraded to this monitor and 3d vision and it has transformed my flying.

Recommend FSX users with nvidia 8800 or higher and standard monitor to go into Nvidia control panel, set up stereoscopic 3d, and select 3d vision discover. Put on one of those cheap cardboard 3d glasses you get free with some films and sample 3d gaming without any cost.
 
Hi guys I just got my new fsx system last week. I got the 2600k clocked to 4.8ghz with 8gb corsair ram on the Asus p8p67 deluxe mb. Got the gtx 580 by asus. The processor is amazing for fsx and the additional ram also a must. I'm running on Sata 6gb caviar blacks in raid. I use max settings with Rex and orbx scenery only use 75% traffic. Getting over 100 fps in most standard fsx cities, large airports around 80fps. Over large cities and airports in orbx areas around 50-60fps. I'm amazed at how smooth and stable my system is running fsx. IMO get the 2600k for this CPU intensive beast.

As above that's FSX with REX2.0 over Seattle- Orbx PNW add on.
Traffic sliders all on 75% -Weather cloud draw on minimum as this hammers FPS with little visual impact. All other sliders maxed out.

2600k - 4.9Ghz
