Oscar Nominations 2011

Toy story 3 or Inception will easily destroy all other films for best picture. Im hoping for TS3 but they are both great!

I'd love you to be right, but they are clearly the two films least likely to win best picture. Just the academy trying to show that they aren't totally set in their ways. Even though they are.

Sorry, but anyone saying that any film other than The Social Network should win best screenplay is bonkers.

Why? It's a very simple, based on fact, linear, if a little incomplete story, told in very old school "start at the end, then flash back" way, without unexpected twists, special dramatic story line breaks or adrenaline pushers. There is nothing new or uncommon about the way this story is told and it doesn't offer anything that two or three paragraphs of wikipedia, or two A4 pages of colour magazine couldn't summarise with better pace, humour and dramatic effect.

So, what made this screenplay interesting for you?

:o You couldn't be more wrong. Best Picture is between The King's Speech and The Social Network.

It's written by Aaron Sorkin. The man is a genius. The screenplay is so witty that it makes the majority of its competition look average. You're talking about narrative structure. Screenplay has nothing to with narrative ark, that's the directors job. Sure he works from the script but he's the one who chooses HOW the story is told, he doesn't have a say in what is ACTUALLY said unless he wants to co-write the project.

You need to acknowledge the distinction between narrative and screenplay

Agree on the second part, Don't see anyone else touching Sorkin for those awards. Fantastic, amazing writer. Who wrote The Social Network wonderfully.

True Grit can't be ignored for best picture imho, but I think it's between those three to fight it out.

I'm still surprised - almost to the point where I feel I watched some other Social Network. You say it was more witty than majority of competition? Give us an example.

Adapted you mean? ;) Adapted "The Social Network" wonderfully from Ben Mezrich's book?

If you want to argue over such little things, then yes he adapted it, which meant he wrote it for the big screen no?

I really do hope Kings Speech doesn't win too many awards, it will just be yet another step back and will further cement the Academy Awards as a completely dated institution that is set in it's own ways and a million miles out of touch with the modern age.

Everyone I know that has seen the film loved it.

Wtf? Did How to train your Dragon beat Toy Story 3?

Oh right, those are your predictions >_>
