STS-133 Shuttle Mission to the International Space Station Launches Thursday 21:50 GMT

I thought they didn't have the budget anymore and that everything would be on on hold after the shuttle program?

So is that it for Space exploration until the forseable future? That just doesn't seem right. How else are they going to get things up to the space stations, repair satellites etc? They must have something else in the pipeline.

I heard that they are waiting for commercial spaceflight to become feasible and to use that method (see: Virgin Atlantic) to connect with the space station. I may be wrong though.

Soviets might be taking over excursions to the ISS. It might not be till 2014 at the earliest before USA goes into space again with Ares I - Orion rocket system. They're trying to raise funds through commercial private enterprise since budget cuts from the obama administration. That seems to be the gist from what I read. Could be wrong though.

So 2016 is when the international agreements run out as well as the international funding for the ISS?

After that I guess it'll be open to investment from private firms? I wonder if a multi billionaire would stump up some funds to spend his final days orbiting the earth, like that billionaire in the film Contact. Certainly would be the way I'd want to go if I could afford it.

You do know the Soviet Union vanished in 1991, don't you? :)

The ISS was due to be abandoned in 2015 - until people recently saw sense and agreed to an extension. The supply contracts for that extension will be negotiated in due course.

The wakeup call today is at 11:23 GMT (06:23 EST) and the plan for today is:

Flight Day 5

• Spacewalk 1 by Kopra and Drew (J612 power extension cable installation from Unity to Tranquility, transfer of failed pump module from the payload attachment bracket on the mobile base system to external stowage platform 2, installation of a wedge for camera port 3 and installation of starboard crew equipment and translation aid (CETA) cart rail stubs)

The spacewalk is due to start at 16:15 GMT (11:15 EST).

oh man that's awesome pics you got there. Btw simulatorman are you a fan of this or a actual engineer\scientist? sorry for asking but you know a lot about this lol.

Bah, couldn't see the space station just now. Too much cloud cover and street lights. Gonna keep an eye on it for the next few nights and drive out somewhere away from streetlighting.

Saw it last night pass over and i live in the urban city...was quite bright...wasnt 110% sure if it was the ISS as there was some cloud cover and it was moving but concentrating on it, i could see it slowly fade out...was like a bright start moving north from where i was.

That last lot were grabbed from the live NASA TV stream (links in post 1). Spacewalk 1 is on now, you should watch it.

I wish I was employed in the space program but I've just got a great interest in space and manned space flight.

WHO JUST WATCHED IT GO OVER ? :D :D :D :D I DID I DID I DID !

Sorry for the clear childishness I am showing here, but thats what space exploration does to me, fills me with a sense of almost silly wonder and hope and all that, I love watching this kind of stuff, especially out my bedroom window, haha, seen it a few times and its awesome, im always surprised at how fast it shifts !!!! lol

Wow love that video of the Shuttle launch from the plane is crazy.

I just had an ISS flyby but the clouds were too much tonight :(

I fancy watching some NASA documentaries now!.
