A little off-topic but I have a friend who is genuinely scared of sweetcorn. We went to prague with him and someone had some on their plate, he ran a mile bless him. I know its not nice, but it was really funny

I have a very weird phobia. I am really scared of the tunnels in aquariums. The first time I went to an aquarium i was really looking forward to going throught the tunnel, but freaked out when i was in there. Ran through and wouldn't go back through it. the staff had to escort me through the sea lions to get out. I was late twenties at the time. Embarrassing.

Phobias are by definition irrational. If you are asking why someone has a phobia of something, then you don't understand the concept of a phobia.

I believe the correct term is Ornithophobia. This is a fear of birds though.

Ha - I saw this online a few years back and it freaked me out for some strange reason, I couldn't stop thinking about it for a few hours. Occasionally I think about it now. My heart sank when you posted this - thanks!

Button-phobia fascinates me. Seems people just get it independently on their own, with no trauma associated with it - and that the little plastic ones on shirts are invariably the most disgusting:

Mrs Ergates' mum has that. She's fine with toggles, and push buttons etc, and cloth covered buttons are mostly OK - like you say, it's the plastic shirt buttons that are the worst. Have to be careful when buying her clothes.

Again, phobics generally can't tell you exactly what it is about their phobia that actually scares them. A phobia is an irrational fear - fear with no logical explanation. If you can explain your fear, then it's not a phobia.
