Wifi antenna extension cable to improve signal?

Hi guys :)

I have an OCUK Value Wireless-N PCI Adapter and get really rubbish signal from my wireless n router. To be fair it is quite far away and my computer is under a desk with a load of metal drawers in between it and the router.

My router is a sold box with no antenna so I can't extend the antenna or anything. So I recently bought a 2.8m WIFI antenna extension cable SMA off a well known market site :D with the aim of extending my own antenna out from under the desk. But it doesn't seem to do anything, reception is not improved even though I put the extended antenna next to my laptop which has 'excellent' reception.

Any ideas? Does the extension cable plan sound like a good or stupid one in principle?

Any help would be awesome.

Here's what you need.

Did you know, apparently you have to be carefull with them big antennas because some of them break the trancemission laws in the UK and you have to have a licence to use them :P Because of the gane on them.

Ha! That thing is awesome.

I have managed to find a spot on my wall where I get good signal. So my massively extended antenna is taped to the wall at that spot. Reckon that will have to do!

Thanks for the help.

I do slightly regret not getting a giant antenna. I hear the ladies love that kind of thing.

haha, it's not actually illegal... I bought myself some around 5 years ago to boost my signal through a breeze blocked garage. It's a 9db antenna... was around a tenner 5 years ago. Think they are still the same.

The pic makes it look huge. It's not that big lol

Well, the way I am doing it means I only have to run a cable up to the wall. The router is in a different room some way away so a network cable would be rather annoying unless I took the carpet up etc.

The ideal solution would have been to run it through the electrical cables but those sockets are around £40 and the antenna extension cable was £3.

I am happy with the results for now.

Is running it through electric cables viable though... how great is it to do that vs wifi?

My experience with stuff like this has been great. They work really well. Better than wifi.

This is an easy and cheap method to boost your wifi .

Yes I was tempted by this but the room does not really allow for it. The router is on a shelf ... I couldnt really be bothered :D

The idea of wrapping the tin foil round cardboard is a really good one. I might have a go with this later. But in any case I get good signal now anyway so I'm happy.

Step dad has £90 pair hooked up to the CCTV system... can you run more than one set?

I know i can't get any better download speeds from these, but i don't expect that. just a better response time/ping.

Tbh, currently I ping 18-34 through wifi. Worth getting these?

Dont know. Let us know if you find out.

Dont know. I never did any benchmarking or anything. I reckon if you get good wifi n signal currently then its not worth it. If you get poor reception then go for it.
