Why is it sociably unacceptable to eat road kill?

First of all, I want to get one thing out of the way: I'm not going to eat road kill, nor do I intend in doing so!

However, suppose someone was to run over and kill a rabbit. Why is it then unacceptable to pick up the rabbit, take it home and eat it? It's my understanding you can buy rabbit meat openly.

it's not, it's just most people don't know how to gut, to frightened and have a mental image of week old road kill.
I've known several people to get train kill in my job and eat it. One even carried a dear a mile down track before giving up and just taking the leg.
 
Food's, food in my book ;)

Then again, I have a stomach like a pawn shop, probably not the best person to ask.

buy rabbit from the butcher

swing a sledge hammer towards it at 40mph

see if you still feel 'acceptable' gutting/stripping then eating it
 
Depends how badly damaged the carcass was, if I knocked down a deer and it wasn't a total mess then I would consider getting it butchered


although I draw the line at a rabbit that's been squished to an unrecognisable pulp
 
Id go with the general consensus that as long as its not turned inside out road kill and just knocked down dead then its ok to eat.
 
Aren't you not allowed to eat the road kill you produce by yourself.

Got to be careful. I know someone that ran over a pheasant, put it in the back of his car and drove off. Turned out it wasn't quite dead yet, he nearly crashed as it tried to claw his eyes out.
 
Don't see what the fuss is about tbh.

If you've just killed the bugger it's about as fresh as its ever going to be.

I've had pheasant before and also some kind of medium sized deer which wrote off the peugeot hatchback - left the front a mess but still managed to get home plus deer in boot.


If you're scraping random splats off the tarmac that's another matter. I wouldn't stop to grab a flat bunny just because I saw it on the road.
 
Because people cba to stop and examine the remains of whatever just got a 70mph acquaintance with their front bumper?

And why would you want to eat other people's road kill? We make a big enough bloody fuss about the origins of the meat we eat in this country, it would be a touch crass to then starting feeding on god-knows-how-old-or-infested road kill.



I tried to think of a Michelin reference joke and failed. If anybody else wants it, it's theirs!
 
I thought you can't eat road kill you hit, but if someone behinds you does its perfectly fine.

I would eat road kill.
