A silly question really, but as im not a expert in cars if I dont ask ill be having nightmares all week.

Anyway looking on Auto Trader as you do, thinking if I had a pot of cash what sports car could I buy (reasonable pot like 30k-50k or something) ... so I do the normal, Ferrari... nope nothing recent, Lambo... no chance.... Porsche... a fair few Boxters, some 911s, then I look at Maserati.

Why are some of their cars so cheap 2nd hand... i mean i cant tell if they are wrecks or what not, but going from Auto Trader a low mileage 2002-2004 Maserati (not a convertible) can be listed at between 15-20k!

So are Maserati a budget car maker? Or did they make a budget range or something? Or are they absolute dogs 2nd hand, unless kept under a certain mileage etc

Im obviously missing something, ive heard of Maserati and I always for some reason associate them with Ferrari.... are they just sporty Fiats?

Serious replies please as I do actually want to understand what the brands place in the market is, as you never know.. the Mrs might get serious food poisoning tonight  ;)

You are running a Ferrari without the badge.

Maserati running costs are extreme, with that aside if you like them they are a great bargain.

OK that makes sense, when we say expensive are we also saying they are pretty unreliable so repair/upkeep bills are high?

Or is it mainly the juice it will eat just to get the thing off the drive :D

Cheers for the replies though.

A grand for a medium service 2k for a big one, 15 to the gallon, 250 quid a tyre, the list goes on.

Perfect illustration of this is an Auto Express Group Test i stumbled upon the other day

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/grouptests/215190/v8_vantage_vs_granturismo_vs_xkr.html# (click on facts and figures link)

Jaguar XKR First service - £228
Aston Martin V8 Vantage N400 first service - £800

...

Maserati Granturismo First Service ???

£1090 !!

Ferrari running costs, without the ferrari badge.

XKR only costs £228 for the first service, that is quite cheap.

thats the price quoted to auto express by the press office.

First service is usually only an oil change anyway. Some would consider £228 for an oil change expensive !

I've looked into them as an alternative to a 911 in a few months. Everyone in the trade has told me running costs are insane!

I know I shouldn't do it but a beautiful coupé with a Ferrari engine for 18k!?

Want.

My colleague had a Quattroporte and the repair bills he got were insane. I'll ask him tomorrow for a few examples, it was in the Maserati/Ferrari garage quite often!

One thing that did make me chuckle was that he was spending thousands while it was in there, and he'd be given a red Fiat 500 courtesy car, complete with Ferrari badge on it. :D

We had a couple of those as well for a while as courtesy cars for Ferrari/Maserati customers lol

Well the first scheduled service is £1,090, the 2nd £1,757 and the 3rd £1,152

so over the 3 years of your warranty period, you'll have spent .. £4k on scheduled servicing alone.

Then to add to that tyres (£275 front, £295 rear) brake discs (£733 each) and brake pads ( £459 each) means they are serious money !

(all part prices taken from evo buyers guide)

two friends have had a coupe and 3200GT, both have cost them going on £1k a month (excluding fuel at <19mpg & depreciation) to keep on the road

amazing cars but a total money pit :(

That one i bought after spending the 3k when i got it hasnt cost anything, which was surprising.

A client of mine drove me around in his quattro porte in the states recently. Lovely car. He owes me a lot of money, perhaps he has had to pay his servicing bill and can't now afford to pay me.

Take the car off him in part payment, i do hate a debtor.

He's based in LA so it's a challenge. I'm on a promise for part of the money next month if it doesn't show up I'll be ramping up. He has a few classics at his place of work too.

Just take it off him and store it there.

I tell you i got to the stage with ***** owing money, i dont care if i dont get it, as long as they suffer too.
