Hello, a problem has just arisen with my computer.

i7 2600K processor
8GB Gelid RAM
Asus GTX 480 graphics card
MSi P67A-GD55 motherboard
2x1TB samsung spinpoints in RAID1
1 OCZ 60GB SSD as the OS drive
1x1TB samsung spinpoint as the programs drive

With advice from you guys I ordered the components and assembled it myself with no issues, and it's been running fine for 3 weeks with only one minor issue*. Yesterday I was playing GTA4 and the computer crashed (num lock would not respond). I reset the computer and everything was fine, checked the temperature logs and it was in perfectly safe territory, nothing unusual (CPU ~45 C, GPU ~80C at the time of crash). Resuming the game I played some more and another crash occured.

This time the computer would get past the windows splash screen and the screen would turn on and off multiple times, sometimes the windows theme would play, sometimes not, but after a minute or two the numlock light would stop working and the system would restart, offering the safemode/normally choice. (also the RAID1 array (just files, not the OS) was marked as status:verify in the boot screen.)

Safe mode worked fine, including the RAID1 disk, so I uninstalled the network driver and the graphics drivers and used driver cleaner to remove and restarted, booting into regular 7 perfectly well. I reinstalled the wifi drivers, restarted and everything was fine. Then I did a clean install the latest Nvidia drivers (266.58) and restarted, and uh-oh, doesn't want to boot again. I tried disabling Aero by regedit in safemode and still no joy.

So, do you guys know how I can get my PC working again with the proper drivers installed? I'd quite like to play some games :D

*Intermittently the system would become juttery due to a problem with the wifi card, disconnecting from the network and reconnecting solved the problem when it occured

Try another install of the graphics drivers. I installed today and it would boot a blank screen. Had to safe mode and re-install drivers. Perhaps the drivers got corrupt first time round?

A Corsair TX 950W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply.

I'll try redownloading the drivers, yeah, just in case. Didn't seem to work with the one from windows update or the one on the CD that came with the card either though.

Just formatted the SSD, installed windows 7, installed all the updates (except the graphics drivers), everything was fine, then I installed the graphics drivers and kaput, it doesn't boot properly.

Checked inside the case, power cables are secure and the card is firmly in the topmost slot.

Ok, this may sound like an odd suggestion but hear me out. Force the pcie lane to run at less than x16 - either through the bios or by installing any other pcie device in the second slot.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to a BIOS option for that, and I have no spare PCI-E devices :(

Filled in the Asus support form, perhaps I'll have to RMA it. Ho-hum.

I had a similar problem with my GTX 570. What was wrong was I had my TV plugged in as well as my monitor. So I turne my PC off plugged the TV cable out and turned it back on and voila it worked. So just make sure you only have one cable plugged into the GTX 480.

About to swap graphics cards with my old computer, so an 8800 GTX is going to my new one and the 480 GTX is going to the XP machine. I guess we'll see if it's the motherboard or the graphics card playing up.

Well, unfortunately the 480 GTX cannot be tested using the old computer because the PSU doesn't have the extra 2 pin PCI-E power cable required, and changing PSU's as well is too much faff.

On the other hand, the 8800 GTX works fine on this new PC with the correct drivers installed (of course, the same drivers as the 480 GTX), so that rules out the motherboard, right? I guess it's time to call OCUK and return the GTX480.

Update: Got the GTX480 back from RMA, apparently there's nothing wrong with it.

I've now also tried updating the bios to 1.8 from (I think) 1.4 and running the graphics card from the 2nd PCI-E slot. Still no joy. Any idea what could be causing the problem? Boots and immediately crashes when the drivers are installed, when the drivers are deleted in safe mode and it runs off default VGA drivers it works fine.

Have you run a mem test? I've had dodgy memory cause numerous seemingly unrelated problems in the past.

Very odd - I've had the exact same problem you described which was down to a faulty card. If memorys fine, and the gfx is back with a clean bill of health I guess it's time to start looking at either the PSU or the mobo.
