I currently have an his 5870 v turbo and game at 2048 x 1152, my question is will it cope with this yrs upcoming titles, mainly battlefield 3 i'm not to bothered about crysis 2 from what i've seen. I will try the beta for b3 when it arrives in october. Should i be waiting for the ati 7000 series or the 570's and 580's successors. Have an i7 930 @ 4.00mhz with 6gig ram so no bottleneck yet.

Im in a similar situtation.

The truth is no one can answer this untill the game is out and benchmarks are made.

Remeber, however that these game do scale, just drop a few settings, and the game will look great and play fine.

Im fairly sure my rig will last me untill Win 8 comes out ~ 2 years.

I suppose the other options would be pick up another 5870 for crossfire or a 480 and oc it, similiar price right now. But would my 650tx cope with crossfire and a 930 @ 4.00mhz? I doubt it.

For 5870 with 1GB video memory, it might be a pain to enable 4AA for such resolution. However 5870 is a very nice card like 8800, which can last at least 2 years.

In my experience top end cards generally have long lifespans as it takes longer for games to make full use of their potential. I've seen this with both my 9800pro and X1900XT which were still able to play games comfortably several generations later.

I have read that crossfire 5870's under full load in an o/c system run at roughly 590 watts, is 650 enough of a buffer. Psu is not yet yr old. Full system in sig. Amd recommend 600 watt min for xfire 5870.

People will find whether or not their card or system can handle a new title a partially subjective matter, so unless you know for certain that a title will make your gpu weep (like Doom4), wait until you have first hand experience.

That's why i'm going to play the beta first when it arrives as i will have a key from medal of honor sp edition, before i think about change as i play everything i've got at full res no problem.

It's quite simple really. If you find yourself playing a game which you know will be giving you some long term joy yet the frame rate isn't where you want it to be, then ask that question. I'd say just wait it out for now.

Thanks for all advice, apart from b3 i don't think i'll be buying much else game wise this yr so will wait it out and see how my 5870 ages.

650W should be sufficient for 5870 x2 crossfire, if not overclocking heavily and running 24x7 folding.

Sorry to jump in but what about a OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w.

But only has a few cables.

1 x 20/24-pin ATX
- 1 x 8-pin CPU
- 1 x 4-pin CPU
- 1 x 6-pin PCI-E
- 1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E
- 4 x Peripheral
- 2 x Floppy
- 6 x SATA

Can i use adapters or would i need a new psu for xfire 5780?.

Thanks.

ghost, 600watts is cutting it fine with 5870 xfire, ideally most recommend 750+ it depends on rail output amps my 650w corsair has a single 12v rail rated at 52amps. I think i would be leaving little headroom. 2 cards draw about 390watts on their own. Yes you would have to use molex adapters the same as i would.
