Can I sell / swap a phone on contract?

The mrs decided it would be cheaper to ditch her pay and go and sign up for a contract. She found a deal for an HTC Desire HD on 02 for 24 months. The lenght of the contract is fine as it's only £20 a month and for that she gets as much voice, texts and internet as she needs.

Now comes the problem............she hates the phone and to be honest, I can't say I blame her. Would it be possible to either sell the phone or find someone willing to swap it for a model she wants (maybe an iphone 4) so long as she keeps the o2 sim and carries on paying the £20 a month?

Yes, the phone comes after the contract, you are paying for minutes, texts, data etc. So you're free to do what you like with your phone.

The phone is terribly slow, videos are jerky and the picture messaging doesn't work properly. Now if it was my phone it would be ok as I'm a geek and I don't mind pratting about playing with settings and what not.

She just wants it to work

If you are not happy with rooting around with the phone and installing alternative ROM's:

Try Settings -> Application -> Development - > Tick "USB Debugging" that should fix the speed issue

Not sure about picture messaging, never use it so I'll have to test :)
 
Those problems don't sound normal. That phone is more than powerful enough to breeze through the tasks you mention. Has it been updated since it came out the box?

Go to settings > About phone > System software updates and make sure it's all up to date.

I've already done the USB debugging and it has the latest software. I believe the picture messaging is a known problem, something to do with using too much compression. There are 3rd party messaging apps available but they are all a bit rubbish.

Video recording and playback is a joke
 
I have no problem with video recording and playback its awesome, it was on the stock ROM and is still awesome now. It also very good at playing back ripped films I find.

If you don't like the phone, then consider contract SIM only? Likely to save a lot and then pick up a phone she likes.

Why didn't she just get an Iphone in the first place? Or did she not want to pay £40 per month?

I'd see if you can still send it back if she hasn't had it too long, but I highly doubt anyone will swap an Iphone 4 alone for the HTC Desire HD you might have to add some cash. You can buy them SIM free for £369 now where the Iphone is £500. :)
 
Best bet is to buy iphone 4 for £450 and sell Desire HD for £300. If they don't like the iphone 4 then its her fault, and you are blameless.

Desire HD, not Desire. That's a lot of value to lose in only a few months.

Although checking on ebay they do seem to be going for sub £300 now.

edit:

I'm not completely clued up on Desire HD, but weren't they £450 on release ?

Ahh, missed the HD part, I guess now is the best time to sell... I know the non-HD desire goes for around £200.

Another option is to see if your mobile phone contract has a cooling off period, if it does then you can use this then go for an iPhone contract. :)
