Valve Unveils Hardware-Based Steam Securit

I have an AMD cpu :/

Just do what Blizzard do. It works, will be just as effective, and you won't have all these problems about people needing to buy certain CPUs, having to mess around when upgrading or anything like that. Ugh.

Why are so many fine with this, or with using a dongle system? I can't be assed having to fish out some tiny dongle that I could easily lose just to play a game. If activison had made this announcement everyone would be dissing it. Isn't the DRM fine as it is? Its the same old story, it will eventually get bypassed by hackers.

The whole point in getting a digital copy of a game is because its more convinient and you don't have to bother holding onto any physical things like discs or dongles if you want to play your game :/

I think it means changes to things like your mail address and password, not blocking game playing etc... Like the current notification system to a mail address - but with a hardware barrier.

This isn't DRM. It's an optional extra to stop hackers stealing your account. It's not some security system they're putting onto games to stop people pirating them - this directly affects your security. I can't see why anyone would be against an extra layer of security on an account filled with with your possessions.

You don't understand this thead.

Now this would be a voluntary extra so if you like to access your games from different computers then this may not be suitable, but there are those who only use one computer for gaming who could benefit from this system.

That's the problem. People who give away passwords via phishing sites/key loggers aren't going to think to sign up to such a service.

It would mean that hacking Valves servers for information would be pointless.

Nobody is hacking Valve.

Hacked account = user gave away password via phishing site or key logger.

Think i'd pass tbh. Extra security is never a bad thing but this just sounds like it could be more trouble than its worth, especially if you do your best to not login to streampowered.com....

I don't like this solution at all, I do have an idea though. What if valve send a picture via email to every account holder and that picture is personal to that account so if an issue arrises you could email the picture back to valve to prove ownership. When I say picture it could be clip art or thumbnail not huge wallpapers!

Making use of Intel's forthcoming Identity Protection Technology, Steam Guard will let users limit control of their Steam account to a single PC, meaning that even if their password is cracked, their accounts will remain secure.

So not happy with locking games to one account they are now suggesting locking games to one computer?

Wiping out any resale value of games is one thing but this is now getting daft.

It's OPTIONAL

What I would like is a generated keyfile that you can store on a USB drive.

Because not everyone has an Android or iPhone phone, there's no reason they couldn't make one though.

And not everybody wants to link their acount to hardware. They can also go RSA tokens which Blizzard offer for a nominal fee. Considering the average Steam account will outweigh the value (arguably) of a battle.net account this a much better idea.

Cost of USB dongle = cost of RSA token.

RSA token system can be integrated with a phone application ergo better due to more flexibility whereas a dongle cant. Its also something else to loose.

Well they don't have to, there's no reason the option can't be available though, nor am I saying they shouldn't have an app or something else.

the only thing that worries me, if enough people sign up to this then it may not be optional in the future.

I'm probably one of the very few gamers that hasn't played WOW (too scared of how hooked I'd get) what exactly do Blizzard do?
