Valve Unveils Hardware-Based Steam Securit

Looks to me like a step into a bigger plan.

1-First stage introduce the not so bad side of it so people get used to it and start using it

2- Patch it and sell it to developers to use as DRM

3- Royally **** off the fanbase.

so you will not able to use your account on different pc ? or im getting it wrong. so if you go to parents over weekends u will not able to use steam.

well if its voluntary

Steam Guard allows users to link management of their account to a specific PC. Attempts to modify or change account settings by any other PC won't be possible without the user's approval.

Management of the account! As in changing the email/password. You can still access the account and game on as many PCs/laptops as you want. You just need to use the main PC to change passwords/settings.

Seriously, this is actually a pretty cool move. Its not forcing people into anything, and in some ways is less intrusive than the Blizz authenticator as I wouldn't have to put a code in each time I started steam up.
That said, I don't think I'm going to upgrade anytime soon, so it doesn't matter much to me.

Question

How do I authorize my account on a new computer?
Answer

In order to authorize your account on a new computer, you will need to enter in a verification code that is sent to the email address registered to your Steam account.

If you are unable to access the email address on the account, please see the Changing the Contact Email for a Steam account FAQ.

If you no longer have access to your other computer or your email address, please contact Steam Support.

lol misinformation at its finest

Thats said it may be a dry run for including the feature in games themselves once they have proven it works on scale...
I really dont like the idea of linking things to hardware though, considering the frequency by which most of us upgrade/replace parts of our machines it is a worrying direction developers are trying to move things

p.s.
panicking

p.p.s
sorry :p

How are they going to do that though? Ban older CPUs than a few years old and only allow Intel?

i did say future but i remember at one time someone mentioning punkbuster the anti cheat software considering banning cheats by hardware, not sure if there was any truth in it but surely there are ways of identifying different computers without the new intel cpu's.
