Would a Mondeo ST220 be too fast/too big for you? Can pick up a good example for £5k and offer great VFM.

I don't know for sure, but i would guess that you would never fit a buggy in a 182 or a CTR.

If you by anything with bucket seats that have holes for 4 point harnesses in them (As the ATR does, and I'm sure others there do too), as soon as your child can reach they will poke you/pull your hair through them. You have been warned :p

The Accord Type R worked quite well for us as a family of 5, the only annoying bit being trying to mount a bike rack the the boot with the huge spoiler in the way :D The boot isn't the largest either, so you may want to check that for buggy suitability.

We did about 100k in it over 3 years from new and it never let us down, although it was broken into twice for the stereo.....

Finding a good one may be difficult as they seem to have largely fallen into the wrong hands - there are only 4 on PH atm, none more than £2k and none I'd want :(

Integra Type R

Only get one that has had very regular oil changes and has been re-bushed

Edit, didn't see the baby part, probably a bad idea with two doors

5.5k picked me up a very nice 05 plate ST220 last month.

More than big enough for me, the missus and a child of 4 and all the family gubbins.

Quick enough and sharp enough on the handling side to put a smile on my face when I want to take it out for a blast.

I put a mini review up on here a few weeks ago (which reminds me, I need to add pictures to that thread) if you want a little more info :)

The Octy vRS has a lot of space inside.
And the boot on those things is just - well massive.

I think you'd be looking at a late Mk1. with a £5k budget.
So that is the 1.8T engine - which is certainly no slouch.

Yeah, the DB8

Still wouldn't like one for a baby though, the gf grumbles enough from the noise / harshness

£5k would get you a very nice mk1 Octavia vRS. That said it will also buy you a decent ST220. For me the choice would come down to fuel economy.

If you want to be the right side of 30MPG day to day then get the Octavia, if you are happy dropping into the twenties then IMHO the ST220 is the better car.

My ST220 has averaged 30MPG on a gentle run across the pennines, mixture of motorway, twisty b-roads and town driving. If I were to really baby it I think it would nudge just over 30MPG.

Overall since I've owned the car I've averaged 22.8.

I've had 36mpg from my st220, driving like a fairy on a motorway run though. Generally if you take it easy you'll easy get 30. heavy right foot a lot will reduce it to 20

IMO, the Mk1 Octy is looking a bit too dated these days, especially from the front. What about the LCR? IIRC that would give a slightly increased power output on an otherwise very similar car? The boot would also be easily big enough for a buggy.
I do agree with you and the others in the thread that this calls for an ST220 if the OP can put up with the fuel consumption. The only thing I would suggest if the OP does go down the ST220 route is to go for a hatchback rather than the saloon posted above.
