Looking for a new home theatre system :)

Exactly, I believe you can rename the sources as well, PS3, Virgin etc and it will pop up with nice Dolby digital or DTS logo. Thinking about it that Onkyo system also does TrueHD and DTS MA so you can play all the HD audio tracks from your blu-ray as well, not a HUGE difference to most people but the difference is there and you can get the most out of your setup.

The Onkyo set is currently £203 on Pixmania but out of stock, it might be worth dropping them an email about stock as its almost £50-60 cheaper than most places once you take into account deliver. They are based in france but I ordered my surround set off them and service was perfect.
Ok cool,
Well i have found it for £230 at Richer Sounds so i will go there.
The Virgin box will need to be connected via optical though to get Dolby Digital on the HD channels. Its HDMI connection doesn't carry the signal, just stereo.
Ok, so just run an optical from Virgin into receiver yeh?

Yup should do it. You might need to tell the Onkyo that the HDMI connection that it is using, the sound needs to come from the Optical connection. Should be pretty easy though.

Ok,
Thanks mate.
Has anyone on here used the Sumvision Cyclone Micro 2? I was just about to order the Viewsonic but i saw this and it is cheaper.
I did have the Micro 1 but sent it back because it only outputted at 480p. This seems to output at 1080p?

I'm thinking of buying one for my brother. Does 1080p, mkv. It's pretty basic but they say works well enough. Only HDMI out for everything, no other connection.
For the money out seems great but lacks features and connectivity of the £70 players but I've found it for £32!

Yeh looks perfect.
For £32 cant go far wrong.
Would i just run HDMI from Cyclone to Onyko receiver? and then get surround sound?

I guess it should work by plugging into the av receiver as long as that can pass the picture through and out to the tv with a second cable

Hi fellas,
I have just moved into my new house and have got Sky HD etc all setup now and my dad wants to get some proper surround sound.

What kind of setup should i be looking at? around 3-400.

Thanks

There are plenty of "Spec me" threads. The typical recommendation list usually ends up looking like this:

Best value/lowest cost 5.1 audio systems with HD audio decoding

  • Onkyo HTS3405 av receiver & speaker package kit - £249 - Perfect if you want a one-stop solution and you aren't likely to upgrade
  • Sony STRDH520 av receiver & Yamaha NSP285 speaker kit - £149 + £100 = £249 - Great entry-level system and a perfect starting point for the budding AV enthusiast

Step-up AV Receivers - 1080p scaling or network features

  • Sony STRDH820 Scaling AV receiver - £249 - features video upscaling to 1080p and improved audio circuitry
  • Onkyo TXNR509 Network AV Receiver - £289 - features ethernet port and DLNA compatibility - play music files from your Home PC/NAS drive and also stream music from internet radio and online music services such as Napster

Step-up AV speaker packages - better audio performance - sweeter treble, deeper and more solid bass

  • Yamaha NSP40 - £120 - bigger and beefier version of the NSP285
  • Boston Soundware XS/Harman Kardon HKTS9/Tannoy SFK5.1 - all pitched at £199 in the discounters. Choose whether you want small form factor or more conventional looks
  • Kef KHT1005.2 "Eggs" - £229 - beefier sub and higher performance satellites

Step-up AV Receivers - 1080p scaling and network features

  • Pioneer VSX921 Scaling Network AV receiver - £399
  • Onkyo TXNR609 Scaling Network AV Receiver - £449

Thanks for that Lucid, with regards to how i was going to setup it would go like this...

SKY HD+ ----hdmi----TV----optical----Onyko HTS3405

Would that be right? using the Onyko as an example?

I also use a small media player which is HDMI to TV for sound and video, i assume whatever would normally go through speakers would be sent down optical out into receiver?

Those "Best value/lowest cost" ones look great for us, which would be your choice?

Thanks

If you're using Sky HD, you'll need the optical or coaxial connection to go from the Sky box to the Onkyo directly to get 5.1.

Sky will only output stereo over HDMI... It's a pain in the arse, but nothing you can do about it.

So:

Sky HD - HDMI - TV
Sky HD - Optical/Coaxial - Onkyo

The Onkyo has passthrough, so you could connect the Sky HD box through the amp and if the amp is off, it'll still push the HDMI signal through to the TV.

Corners are bad places for speakers. People put them in corners because it looks neat, but it knackers the sound.

By all means run the speaker cable discretely.

Regarding ceiling speakers vs inceilings: unless you plan to spend £100+ on some inceilings then I'd say stick with the Onkyo speakers. Those cheap inceilings from the auction place are horribly naff sounding, but it's up to you.

I think i will go for the Onyko. Thanks mate :)

Rather than a new thread or would it be best?
I am also looking for a new TV, just moved into a new house and the current 42" looks like a postage stamp on the wall. Thinking 50"+. What suggestions around that size? the price no more than 800?

Hi again guys,
Once again looking for some new surround sound as we passed the Onyko onto friends. Is there anything out there better than the Onyko for around 200-300?

The Onkyo systems are still probably the best value for money around that price, what prompted you to get rid of the last one?

Nothing prompted me I just was helping him out.

Can't find the Onyko anywhere! so i have bought the Sony HTAS5. Was impressed by it in the shop and at £200 seems a good price.
