6970! not 6690 :D

Only £70 between the 2 of them, the 480 seems to run very hot? I dont know a whole lot about overclocking the geforce cards...the ati 4870's i had overclocked so easily with overdrive.

running on

Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)

Not quite that simple but for the most part its more or less as raven posted - you may need to adjust voltage with more adventurous overclocks which can be a bit more trial and error.

In terms of performance not really anything in it between and OC'd 480 and OC'd 6970, swings and round-abouts at best.

I have a GTX480 and my load temps are around 75c and not nearly as noisy as I thought they were going to be. but then I have good airflow in my case.

Well, aside from the whole stability testing malarky...

No overclock is guaranteed and the GTX480, while they do overclock well, can't be guaranteed to overclock to the levels Raven is talking about. When I had GTX480 SLI even with additional voltage they wouldn't do 820 stable - and they were watercooled.

If your being very adventurous you could get a 480GTX plus a great aftermarket cooler and with a bit of luck, overclock to high heaven.

Then you will have 580GTX performance ( or more) for £240 ( although it might use a bit more power :p)

All three options are valid choices to be honest. I would say 480GTX or 6950 ( and unlock/overclock)

480GTX though if you want performance straight of the box with no fiddling.

Running 820 gpu core, 4050mhz ram on the gtx480, standard voltage and in 3dmark 2011, straight performance test I am getting P6302:D........................mates GTX580 gets P5796.............

To me the choice is right there lol, although the 580 will ramp too obviously, but with that 480 and aftermarket thermalright shaman cooler, cost is around £250

So, GTX480 @ more than stock speed GTX580 and just as cool. Bargainous lol. Aftermarket cooler will be no good if sli is wanted.

From a personal point of view, for me if it wasn't for the power draw then I would go for the 480. Since it is higher than the AMD offerings I'd take something like a 6950, and most likely flash it.

Did you enjoy your noodles, Kylew? :D

There goes your fancy soundcard, sata 3/usb3 cards right out the window with that 4 slot setup. Shaman's a good cooler but 4 slots is such a waste.
