Red USB Ports?

So on the back of my motherboard I have 8 USB slots. 4 black, 2 red and 2 blue.

I'm aware the blue are USB 3.0 and black are regular USB 2.0 so what's different about the red ones? Do they provide more power or something?

Thanks

My guess... without consulting your MB manual... is that the top 2 red ones are eSATA ports :)

There is only 1 eSata on the rear, thats the one at the bottom.

Those ports are red for one simple reason, its one flow of plastic in the mould. It was probably just easier to leave them red. According to the specs they are just a bog standard usb2 port.

I believe I read somewhere that for my board (P8P67 PRO) the red ports are powered (for charging smartphones/iPods etc), though I can't recall where I read that.

Guess we need someone to lick them and do the 9V battery test.

ASRock App Charger

Fast Charge & Charge Anytime

Simply installing the App Charger driver, it makes your iPhone charge up to 40% faster than before. ASRock App Charger supports continuous charging when your PC enters Standby mode (S1), Suspend to RAM (S3), hibernation mode (S4) or power off (S5). The App Charger technology has been fully applied on ASRock Full series motherboards.

pretty sure this feature only works on some of the USB ports on my mobo, so maybe you have a similar feature and thats why those 2 are a different color?

The red is USB 2 and blue are USB 3.

The red ones will also power whatever is connected even when the computer is off. Well, atleast that's what it's like on my motherboard.

I did say a guess :) and it was at a end of a long shift.

Now that I've looked at the user manual I confirm your info

2 x USB2
1 x firewire
1 x eSATA
(top to bottom) :)

Sorry to the OP for the initial duff info :)

USB 3.0 devices are backward-compatible with USB 2.0, and the ports look identical, which makes some sort of visual indicator (such as a coat of blue paint or a "USB 3.0" stamp) extremely useful.

Blue USB ports are USB 3.0, black USB ports are USB 2.0, and red USB ports have increased power output.
