I've sent a T.V component to the USA for repair/refurb. Anyone know if it will be subject to a customs fee? I've spoken to both Transglobal Express and DHL who are responsible for my shipment but neither seem to know if charges will apply. Package is 4.3 kg.

I'm used to customs charges when purchasing from the USA, but as i'm not buying or selling in this instance I'm not sure if a customs fee will apply, hope not! Cheers for any info.

Speak to the courier and they should be able to assist you on this - I've done similar before with DHL and TNT and never been too much hassle.

Both for temporary import , and for return of faulty goods into the country.

Thanks for the information, very helpful. Shipment has cleared customs at Cincinnati so looks like no outward charges, but will expect return charges based on your info.

Repair/refurb is $300, approx £190. I have a regular order shipped from USA to the UK for the value of £40, I normally pay £8 duty on this. I'm assuming as the repair is approx 5x £40 i'll pay roughly £8x5, so around £40. Would this be about right?

I think you're the most knowledgeable person on HMC&E Duties and Levies that i know! :) very helpful indeed!

There's another guy on here who does more work with HMRC than me, I think he does CHIEF entries or something like that but can't remember his username.
I have to know a small amount about import and export for my job, but I'm interested enough in the subject to want to know a bit more about it than most of my colleagues.
