I received a renewal for my car insurance from Bell a few weeks ago and they actually renew it without your permission, you have to phone them to cancel the renewal. They included the certificate of motor insurance as well. I never knew they were allowed to do this, does your insurance company do the same?

I can see why they do it, so you don't bother to shop around and pay more than you could do if you found a cheaper quote, but surely it isn't allowed?

Needless to say I cancelled it but still need to send back my certificate of motor insurance I never actually asked for, so their problem if they get it late.

Every insurance company do it. The renewal will commence at the end of your old policy at the price they send you unless you ring and re-quote/cancel.

Admiral just did this for me. I was really angry until I realised they were £400 cheaper to renew than comparison quotes

I Think it should'nt be allowed but im pretty sure its standard now'a'days.

I'm pretty sure they send a free post envelope to do this? Is it really that hard to stop off at a post box and chuck an envelope through it?

Insurance is something that should auto renew imo. The only people this really annoys are those who are forgetful and not realise their insurance renewed until they check their bank statement and see they are in their overdraft.

I think it's good they do auto renew - means there aren't thousands of people driving without insurance because they forgot their insurance was up for renewal.

@OP - had you already arranged alternative cover before your current insurance policy expired?

No I wont be getting insurance now I can use my bike instead.

Seems I will need to SORN my car soon though since they make it illegal to have a car without insurance unless you SORN it.

doesnt matter if the certificate arrives back after the renewal date, they will take confirmation of cancellation over the phone and ask for the cert back as it is a legal document. auto renewal is common practise these days , you dont HAVE to have it as you can opt out with some companies but then you cant use it as an excuse if you forget to renew your insurance or if they send you a reminder saying your renewal is due soon ring us to renew and you dont recieve that letter.
