When does a 570 become a 580?

http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/inno3d_gtx570_1_25gb_review,10.html

You need 900 on the core or so but even then the lower framebuffer means that it can't really match up to the gtx580 at higher resolutions or with high levels of AA.

From their benchmarks the OC 570 beat the stock 580 and they weren't OCing as much as me.

I understand your point about v-ram though (that's what you mean by framebuffer?)

EDIT - ignore me, didn't read the article properly !

At 907 mhz I was beating all 580s on the stock setting of heaven 2.1 if I remember correctly, got like 63.3 fps

But Heaven (or any synthetic benchmark) is not the be-all-and-end-all. You need to test (back to back) against a 580 in games...

Agreed, it's surprising how powerful the GTX580 really is. Even a mild/high overclock on any lower end card (HD6970, GTX570 included) isn't quite enough to match the stock GTX580. In terms of bang for buck though, the GTX570 is better and more than enough for 1920x1200 gaming.

I never claimed it was an end all benchmark, I posted it because I thought it would be helpful in comparing a 570 to a 580, even in just one situation.
