Cheap holiday in Europe

Me and a few mates want to go on holiday towards the end of August this year. Criteria:

- Needs to be somewhere very cheap
- Sunny and warm would be a bonus, as would a beach
- Needs to have respectable nightlife. Don't wan't anything as full on as Magaluf /Ibiza, but still want somewhere to go at night

We want to go for a week, but may need to drop to a long weekend if it's expensive.

Any suggestions? Thought about Croatia and Bulgaria, but the flights there aren't that cheap (well to the locations I was looking at).

Interrail? Did 2 weeks spent less than £400 including ticket, flights accomodation, food, beer. Awesome and you get to see so much more of Europe. We did: Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin (good clubs), Prague (great clubs), Budapest (outdoor clubs!), Vienna, Innsbruck, Lake Garda (Italy, good climbing and watersports)

Much better than any clubbing holiday you care to mention.

Depends what type of holidays you're after, sand and beachs don't really do it for me in europe. I prefer to take in the culture and experience what it has to offer.

Head towards offenburg, ringshiem. Amazing theme park in a town called Rust. Strasbourg, black forest, hasenhorn, todtnau. Just some of the few all within driving / train distance from each other and I spent 2x1weeks in that area in 2010.

Berlin is awesome, and very cheap. Could do a few days in Munich and a few days (weekend) in Berlin. Get great beer down south and awesome clubs up north. I suppose you could even fly into Amsterdam, spend a day or two there and then get a train (shouldn't be that much) to Berlin. Edit - turns out it is pretty pricey!
We went to Zadar, Croatia a few years ago and whilst it was really good there weren't any clubs and bars were pretty small. Admitably, we missed the peak season but it's not really a partying town. Pag Island though, a few hours on the bus, has massive 24 hour outside clubs and is meant to be amazing. We went the week after the season closed, so it was pants...

I went for 5 weeks, and spent over 2 grand!

Jesus 5 weeks is more time than I'd know what to do with!
Our advantage came when M&S messed up one of my mates exchange rates so when we got to Prague we discovered he had £400 worth of Koruna rather than the £40 he asked for...best 2 days EVER! (We would still have only spent £400 total without this though as we spent ALL the excess money on a 4 star hotel and a cruise down the Voltava on a boat with 3 course meal and live jazz band then after that we were back to the normal amounts of money left over.)

We did Amsterdam - Brussels - Luxembourg - Paris - Geneva - Nice - Rome - Venice - Back to Rome for a night - Interlaken - Munich - Berlin - Back to Amsterdam. Coulda spent more time over to be honest!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm still just getting ideas at the minute. I'm not sure exactly what we'll be doing as it depends on whether my mates can get enough time off for a week away.

If not then we'll be looking at weekend breaks and will probably lean more towards a city like Budapest or Berlin and cram a lot in a short period of time, whereas if we can do a week it'll be more of a holiday and look for a resort on the beach.

I also realise August is a stupid time to go, but it's his wedding early September so we want to go before that, and unless we go 2-3 months earlier it's going to be expensive across the board.

Gonna keep an eye on this thread as my other half wants to go on a cheap beach holiday about that time of year.

If you want a cheap holiday, go in June or September! I know you want Europe but me and my OH went to Sharm El Sheik for a week's all inclusive in a 4 star hotel for £389 all in - best holiday we've ever had!

You're not going to get a good deal in August. Believe me - I'm now a teacher, and have to go on holiday in peak season and be surrounded by squawking children :(

I'm looking for a similiar holiday and see people suggesting Egypt - surely paying £400~ up front to visit a country not exactly in the best of situations is a big risk.

I'd hate to book it and find it would be unsafe for me to go when the time comes or we get there and are scared to do anything.
