Best gaming worlds?

Streets of rage, purely for the music and general shenanigans such as smashign up a pub and then calling the police to back you up. quality.
other than that, Borderlands!

Mass Effect / 2

The space stations feel like real, vibrant, active stations and being able to interact with most people make it feel really.....real.

FAR CRY, CRYSIS or JUST CAUSE C2

but also DOOM 3 and surprisingly PAINKILLER OVERDOSE :D:D

worst is Vegas one and two and the first FEAR, these maps/ graphics look really dated nowadays

now then, F3 and Boarderlands/ Rage?..... not for me i dont like RPG Shooters, too openworld with tiresome side missions, i just want to kill, give me FEAR any day

I found Bioshock to be very immersive. I didn't particularly like the combat or RPG elements but whenever I hear the word 'Rapture' or 'Andrew Ryan' (Aahndroo Roi-ann) I'm instantly transported back there.

Hyrule for The legend of Zelda Twilight princess. My word what an EPIC world. I thought Oblivions was quite good but the diversity oh Hyrule was just insane. I'm tempted to dig out the old Wii and play through it again.

As much as i agree with you on the Zelda worlds, he's after a PC game, not a console based game.

Just Cause 2 is what you're after OP.

Elite.

Maybe debatable, but better represented in a frontier flavour imho:)

Graphical wise, i enjoy sailing the tall ships in the engine used to create the likes of Age of pirates, voyage century, and the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Simple engine, but it creates such a pleasing tranquil world.

+1 to that, Rapture is one of the most stunning places in any game to date I would argue! :D

Mario 64's gameworld/playground has to be my fave.

Wind Waker's is probably the most beautiful and charming.

NO HOTLINKING!

Despite having a bad break up a few years back, you can't knock WoW's gameworld. I remember running for hours through forests and villages with a few mates when we were a low level - exploring, seeing the sites and trying to avoid high level mobs. It was great :)

Gothic 2 had a great world, It was beautiful, diverse and full of secrets and mystery. The music was great as well, I can still remember the first time the game went into night time and seeing the amazing starry sky with some nice calming music playing.

One thing that helped it was the game's difficulty, near the beginning of the game almost everything can kill you with ease, so you always felt a sense of danger when you went off the main paths and explored the side roads.

RIFT so far is good, it might be really samey though with not much variation.

But I'm level 12 and Ive seen a fair amount of variation, and it looks beautiful.

Say what you want about WoW but i dont think theres any game that comes close IMO:

Huge world with lots of different enviroments (Desert, Jungle, Mountains etc), Great citys, Cool Races, crazy steampunk technology, a hell of a lot of interesting lore behind it all.
