I have just recently redone my pc and bought all new parts except my 5770 which i kept. Ive built it especially to play biowares new game swtor when it releases. Im now debating wether to get a 2nd card and dual sli or just get 1 better card. my spec is: i7 2600k-corsair vengeance 8gb 1866-antec high current gamer 900w-asus sabertooth p67. I dont mind the extra electric costs if dual cards give me better performance over a single card, and my board supports ati and gtx cards. I have about £200 to spend

also i dont care about getting the best card out there, just want one that will be able to handle swtor easily at its highest settings

I'd honestly recommend selling your 5770 for around £80 and buying something like a GTX 570, much better performance and less potential issues with ATI drivers and crossfire.

With £200 to spend mate I'd either snap up a gtx 480 for £195 or a 6950 and depending on how confident you feel messing about with the BIOS flash it to a 6970. Both these cards should run it great and you could sell the 5770 on. Buying a decent card now means you have the option later down the line of adding another when there cheaper and increasing performance that way.

6950 £209.99 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-119-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

480 £195 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-222-AS&utm_source=forums&utm_medium=banner

Depends how much value you put on performance, 5770 crossfire is nothing to be smirked at (yet anyways). It provides a great and very cheap upgrade path to 5870 levels of performance for single 5770 owners. Of course other cards would offer better performance there's no doubt about that but is the outlay worthwhile? That's for you to decide.

You wont get much for your 5770, 70 quid on MM tops maybe a little more on ebay. That'll get you a 570 at a push with your £200 budget on top of selling your current card. Alternatively you could spend 60/70 quid on another 5770 (second hand obviously) and have 5870 performance. Depends where your priorities lie, if you really think you would benefit by the extra performance then by all means get the better single card. I'm just trying to say don't write off 5770 crossfire immediately.

yeah skippy to be honest id rather spend my money on other things and will probably be saving a bit if just buy a 2nd 5770 so i think i will do that. 2 5770 should be enough to get the most from tor i think, saying as the rest of my system is top notch

the money i save i could put towards getting a intel ssd drive which i value more than a top notch graphics card. the system is purely for 1 game Tor so id be wasting money buying extra performance than i need

If you're purchasing for one game you might want to check the game supports crossfire, generally most popular games nowadays do but do check. By Tor do you mean The old republic? If so from the little I can find online ie this it would indicate that strangely it does not have support so you may want to research this a little first before making your purchase. If the forum post I have linked is correct your best course of action may be to sell the card you have and perhaps get a second hand 5850/5870 and hopefully you can still afford your SSD after that.

One of the down side of crossfire two 5770 is that it's minimum frame rate tends to be lower than the mid-range to high-end cards, plus even on the same frame rate, it is not as smooth as a single GPU card...for example, 25-30fps on a single gpu card is just barely acceptable for most people, but 25-30fps on a dual-GPU set up would jerk so much that it would make you wanna pull you hair out.

Really, I understand the minimums can drop and understand why, but as for it being generally more jerky on the multi gpu setup seems odd. I know there once was the case of micro stutter once upon a time but those days seem long gone. May I ask you to explain why this is supposedly the case, genuinely curious.

ok thanks for the help and suggestions i'm not going to go dual 5770. I'm going to buy an ssd and give the 5770 a go on its own when the game launches and see how it peforms. I might have to play it on low settings for a while but i'll start the saving for a new gpu and get something top notch when i have the money. Think thats the best plan

any suggestions for a ssd? I need about 80gb and I hear intel are the best brand and quality and reliabilty is more important to me than price. Now that the new range is out the older ssd's are a bit cheaper so I was thinking about getting 2x Intel X25-V Value 40GB and running them in raid 0. This will leave me with £90 towards the new gpu, I could then sell the 5770 for £70 so thats £160. Im now thinking the asus gtx 570 is a possibility :)
