Is getting a Desire now a terrible idea?

My T-Mobile contract is up for renewal on Thursday and I've been keen to upgrade from my Hero for a while now. It's very knackered and abused now and likes to spontaneously reboot itself and drop off the network whenever it feels like it.

I realise a lot of the new phones have just been announced but the only one that really appeals is the Desire S and from reading about I don't think that will be available on T-Mob for another 6 weeks or so and I don't want to have to put up with a semi-retarded phone for that long, it's been hugely frustrating living with it for the last 2 months.

The normal Desire does everything I need but it's just a bit old now. I can't help thinking it would be a bit stupid upgrading to an old phone for the next 18 months. What do you reckon I should do?

People might well call me stupid for what I did, but I've had my Desire for a month now. I looked at the Desire HD, but thought it was just too big.

I knew the Desire would become swiftly outdated by the new stuff that's just been announced, but having used it for a month I've loved it, and it does absolutely everything I want it to, so I'm completely happy with my choice to get it.

The real point is that if it does everything you need it to, then you might as well get one. It's still a cracking phone

It's still got relatively good hardware and it's due to get the forthcoming Android 2.3 update. Sure it'll be (and has been) superseded by other phones but I intend to be happy with mine for a good while yet.

Just wait another 6 weeks.. i'm sure you'll survive.... you'll only hate yourself if you get a new "old model", then cry when the Desire S becomes available shortly after.

Plus by the time you can renew again, your new "old model" will be a museum piece!

It is a decent phone right now but this depends on what cost the upgrade is going to be. Obviously,I would try and get the monthly cost as much under £25 as possible. Then at least there is a price benefit.

Cost isn't really an issue. At the moment I pay £20 a month for more texts/calls/data than I will ever use which I will be able to renew. I usually have to pay a small price for the handset (my Hero was £40) but I'm happy with that.

I know I should just hold out but my phone is getting annoying.

I had thought about an iPhone 4 but my work phone is a 3GS and whilst it's quite good at what it does I just prefer Android.

I am waiting for the new htc phones to come out so I can get the Desire at a cheaper tariff hopefully. As mobile phone technology will move on so much in 2 years.
24 months is the contract I will be locked into, so if that's the case I do not wish to get an old phone at a bew price !

The iPhone 4 is considerably better than the 3GS in all departments though but I imagine you've tried one so fair enough.

I have a Desire HD and a Desire, the Desire HD is a considerably better phone but really neither are anything special at the moment. I would honestly say wait for the Galaxy S 2, then you'll be getting an industry leading Android phone with all the bells and whistles that will last you for ages.

If you really cant wait, you need to decide between the Desire, Desire HD and Desire/Incredible S, so I'd go and try them all out and see which you prefer. I dont think you need to worry about anything with any of them to be honest.

The Hero is a god awful phone, whichever one you get it will be a million times better, trust me on that.

I love my Hero. It's still even running 1.5 as the upgrade always fails.

But as Tim says, I've no interest in having a phone as big as a dining table, aka Desire HD, Incredible S, Galaxy S2 etc...

The difference between the Desire HD and iPhone 4/Desire in real use is in fact quite small.

I cant see how people can complain about it unless they have abnormally small hands :p In which case, fair enough!

I am waiting for for the new htc's and Galaxy S2 to hit the market then I can get a reasonable deal on a Desire or Desrire HD !
I have considered buying a htc Desire or HD out right and just get a SIMM only contract for 12 months.
Just waiting now !

Get a Galaxy S cheap as anything now and only a 4" screen so looks sweet, and super amoled wins over the screen on Desier/HD.

Better cpu and dedicated gpu, decent battery life and records 720p sweet far better than the desire and hd.

Galaxy S from what I have been reading does not have even a LED flash.
Also is there not an issue with playing ripped video files ! ?

thats the point i was going to make.
even if you want the Desire more so than the new dual core phones, if you wait a month or two, im sure its price will come down a fair bit.

but then the counter argument is you can always wait a bit longer, but wheres the fun in that?

im kinda in the same boat.

considering selling my iphone 3gs, and buying a brand new samsung galaxy s (only having to pay £20ish extra, if any).

Part of me wants a new phone immediately, but the other half thinks, just wait and get a dual core tegra beast.

Getting an iPhone 4 just before the pending release of a new model is a bit daft in my opinion, as is buying an Android device now before the waves of dual core ones. Cost would be the only thing that would sway that decision and none of the options seem to have reduced in price dramatically. A Desire could be had on a 18 x £25 a month when it was released and you don't seem to get much better than that at the moment.
