Hi guys,

Hope you can help ill try to keep this short my gf has a sudation to have a tooth removed on the 14th and basically needs me to go along with her and to also look after her for 24 hours as advised by the dentist she has no family near by who can look after for the day and her friends are all working.

In eccence my work has a 2 employee rule that they say if 2 people are off on the day they will make no exceptions with allowing anyone else off on that day speaking to my boss she basically said 2 person rule tough can't have the day off i know the business will run perfectly fine if i am not there for a day as i work in a call centre but i am stuck in what to do my gf was up all last night with severe tooth pains keeping me awake and i am powerless to help if she cancels this appointment she may have to wait up to 3 months again

sorry for the wall of text.the 2 person rule is for holiday entitlement as i want it off as holiday but if i just don't turn up ill be put through a disciplinary

Book her a taxi and tell her to grow up.
It's only a tooth. Yes she will be in a bit of pain but it's not going to be life threatening.
All she is going to want or need to do is go home and sit /lie still for a few hours afterwards.
As nice as it would be to hold your GF's hand over this, it's clearly not possible and certainly not worth risking your own problems at work over it.

Your gf does not need someone to hold her hand, it's completely painless having the tooth pulled as she'll get a local anaesthetic.

Afterwards she'll have a sore mouth but again she doesn't need babysat. She just needs to lie up on a couch and let it pass.

Only time your supposed tom keep an eye on someone is if they've been under general anaesthetic which shouldn't be the case for a tooth pull.

Sounds like you are considering putting your job at risk due to your girlfriend having a tooth out. Look at the bigger picture, that's ridiculous.

Your employer has a policy in place which is preventing you from taking time off. I'm not sure what you are expecting us to say? Your only choice is to a) not take time off b) rearrange the appointment or c) take unauthorised absence and put your job at risk

In fairness if you are sedated i think they do advise someone being there with you when you come round and to make sure you get home ok.

Thanks for the replys guys,

i can see what you guys mean but if it helps its not a normal sudation she is having she told me she is having whats known as an ''awake sudation'' an injections which calms her but she cannot operate any equipment or anything and wouldnt be making much sense for the 24 hours.

anyone experienced this at all?

D) fake illness
E) get a friend / famile member to go with her

I'd go for E if that fails I do D but then I dont care about or need my job!

I have been put under sedation before, not for getting a tooth out though.

During the procedure I lost track of time completely and felt sleepy/groggy after. Hospital insist on having someone see you home and not to use public transport by yourself.

My girlfriend and mum picked me up after so I was ok. I can only suggest that a friend makes sure she gets home safely, after that she will be fine just lying on the couch without any help.

wouldnt be making much sense for the 24 hours.

It's no where near as drastic as that, she'll prob feel groggy, so yes, won't be able to drive/operate machinery, but she won't be a complete vegetable.

Anywho, trying talking to your boss and explain the situation, if worst comes to worst, you're just going to have to book a taxi for her. It's hardly worth losing your job over.

Your work is within their rights, unless there are some extra circumstances (such as your GF being disabled or having kids that will need looking after) that would qualify you for emergency time off for Dependants, although you've somewhat prevented that by acknowledging it is an appointment.

Is there no-one else apart from you who could take her? No friends, no family?

Hi Guys,

Sound advice i do like how blunt some of you are lol, well ill think it over its just when seeing your girlfreind in large amounts of pain over as simple as a tooth pain and being kept awake all night with her on a frequent basis i just want to see it sorted,

Thing is although i would love to simply suggest for a freind to go with her all her freinds in plymouth are working day shifts and are unable to get the time off too so it puts me in an alkward situation.

Chatting with my boss the 2 people that are off do completly different work to myself and me having the day off will not affect the needs of the buissness but alas nothing i can do but tell her to cancel worst case scenary and she may need to wait another few months to get another appointment.

MAN UP!

1. Punch the tooth out.
2. Smash Pasty
3. ???
4. Go to work.

In all seriousness, tell her to go by herself and buy her some flowers on your way home.

but alas nothing i can do but tell her to cancel worst case scenary and she may need to wait another few months to get another appointment.

A little bit drastic, like said before, just book a taxi. Most taxi drivers are usually pretty good and will make sure she gets to the door ok.

I can't believe that she'd cancel and wait months for a new app just because you can't go along.

Yes having any medical procedure done isn't exactly nice, but it's just a tooth out with a local anesthetic (an 'awake sedation', not sudation which is the act of sweating :p).

I had some wisdom teeth out and was but under a general anesthetic (put to sleep). Came round and felt like I'd had the best nights sleep ever in just an hour, popped in a taxi and off home.

She will be fine, get a taxi pre booked to take her there and home again after.
