which one am i likely to get further with?

The Phenom is already much faster, and has an unclocked multi. Oh and don't forget, IF YOU'RE LUCKY, you can unlock some extra cores! There is no choice!

im a bit of a newb, the last overclock i did was a barton, but with the normal athlon2 is there a chance of unlocking cores? i can tell its miles behind in terms of cache too

If you mean the 840, then yes, go for it! It's cache will also help a lot, unlike the Athlon 640.

And the Athlon 250 has no hidden cores.

840 has no L3 cache. It's exactly the same as the Athlon II 640, just higher clock speed.

Best Athlon II (value for money) imho is the X3 450. Chance of unlocking a 4th core, and it's a great price atm.

Plus they do 3.8GHz+.

Though the Phenom II 555BE's are a good buy if you want to risk going for an unlock.

ah ha, i had that on the list the other day too, but i read a few threads with people having real issues clocking those, but it turned out to be mem issues

1333 will work just fine. Anywho, I linked that as you'd spec'd the OCZ Gold 1333, which is essentially the same stuff, just more expensive!

Might as well get the 1600 stuff for that price TBH. :)

Year ago I paid £120 for 4GB of that :(

doesnt seem long ago youd pay that for 512mb of good stuff

do you know much about AMD boards and chipsets? i keep reading that the 880 chipset is not as good for unlocking cores, and isnt a good upgrade over the 785, esp if you have the 850SB....
