Is University really some of the best years of your life?

Sorry what?

I went to university to get a qualification to enable me to get a job. What are you on about? :(

Just the fact you're stereotyping uni as "Drinking, getting stoned and hanging out with louts, and living in a kip". Not really true!

I went to University, best 4 years of my life, although after my work expereince year the final year was a drag and it sucked not having a wage every month.

First two years were about going out, making friends, having fun, learning independance and generally being your own person and self discovery in a way.

I'm not the biggest socialite but still out of a difficult situation made good friends and had a great time. Luckily I had some money put aside for the big bills so I didn't have to work other than my placement and a part time job in my second year.

It's not for everyone and the debt that you get left with will serve as a tax for quite a lot of your working life (unless you pay it all off somehow beforehand). It's not that big a deal though.

As I said, best time ever with college too. You miss the days you had when they are gone!

In my experience of 2, 3 including my girlfriends uni, I would say it is for a lot of people.

There are too many people going to university for lack of a better idea

There are complete ******** at uni but you don't have to associate yourself with them. I didn't like my flatmates in halls. I thought i was going to have a **** time at Uni. They were nice, just not my sort of people. So I walked round halls with a bottle of whiskey in freshers week, knocking on flat doors and just talking to random people, and having a good time. You are all in the same boat and 95% of people are friendly and know no one like yourself. Eventually I found some really cool people that I got on really well with, one of them doing my course. I have lived with those people for the last 2 years.

I am so jealous of anyone starting this year. 1st year is so awesome. You only need 40% to pass, and none of your grades count towards you're degree, so it literally is a huge year long drinking and sex bender. Awesome.

Can you explain why you only need 40% to pass the year, doesn't seem good to me?

A year ago uni was the last thing I wanted to do because I thought work would be better than getting into debt, but now I can't wait to go to uni to make some new friends and have fun. Also really looking forward to doing an engineering course that might actually be challenging because it isn't at college.

Is University life really that good as people make it out to be.

I thought it was extremely hard work but from what I've heard from people there they say its a million times better than school.

Any thoughts?

It really is amazing and a LOT LOT LOT easier than school.

Certainly some of the best years of my life.

If you're similar to that bloke that recently raised the thread 'I don't like going out or beer, and prefer to stay in' - well yes - you won't like Uni very much :)

Stay in halls of residence if you can (I remember a 400 person waterfight on a very hot day in summer :) And yes, the girls tops did get very wet :) ). Also the first 6 weeks are critical for making mates .. you should DEFINATELY be going out every single night of the week.

Well that sucks and you were unfortunate.

I don't see why I was unfortunate. Hanging out with drunken louts doesn't appeal to me as I have said.

I still maintained my own circle of friends external to uni, had a great time, got a good qualification, landed decent job, and saved a bomb.

Hardly 'unfortunate' circumstances.

Do you really need the bottle of whiskey in hand to make friends?

edit: Although I am a fan of sailor Jerry, that stuff is gooood

It was Sailor Jerrys :D and the old one, before they ruined the recipe :( :( Wish I kept some bottles of that, it fetches a nice ammount on ebay now!

And whiskey was just my drink of choice at the time! It was freshers week so everyone is drinking, it just means people are more talkative etc!

At my uni (and a lot of my friends ones) you only need 40% pass rate in the first year, and it doesn't count towards your degree, only 2nd year and 3rd year count. I am guessing this is due to the fact that 1st year is 20% learning, 80% making friends, self discovery, learning how to live on your own, cook, do laundry etc etc.

I meant unfortunate that your only option was to be friends with drunk, stoned, louts.. You must have gone to a pretty **** uni.

It wasn't a **** uni. I either had a choice of living at home and saving or else waste money on paying rent to be stuck in a box and be forced to hang out with people who are stoned losers. OK there would be one or two normal ones but I'd rather save money and hang around with my normal mates.

It just has less vanilla and lime now, and tastes more like a plain rum to me now. (Yea I dunno why I said it was a whiskey when it's clearly rum). It's still my favourite drink though but rarely get to drink it due to the price :(

So at any point did you actually live in halls?
