What mp3 player & what earphones do you use for exercise?

Hi there, the reason I post is because I've been training since September 2007, and apart from a couple of months I've pretty much trained this whole time without music because my ipod shuffle kept braking, sweat would get into the earphones and the controls on the earphones would stop working, and the earphones are £20 a time...so eventually I just stopped bothering.

Then a few months ago I wondered if there was waterproof or water resistant mp3 players, I searched online and spent hours reading website reviews and watching youtube videos, I've found several mp3 players that say they're either water proof or water resistant, but was wondering which mp3 players and/or earphones do you guys use?

When I did have music in the past I found that I could run for longer, and I didn't get as bored, and seemed to have more energy and enthusiasm to want to do an hours cardio....without music, I find it hard to push myself as far and as most of you probably know the music they play in the gym really sucks!

So I just thought I'd post and find out whats the best options available and try and get to the bottom of this situation once and for all.

I really would love to be listening to music again and I think as daft as it sounds it would help with my progress.

Do you guys think there is some psychology behind music and exercise? do you feel like it motivates you? Why does it seem to give us more strength and energy? I wonder if there's been scientific studies on this.

Also some of you might not know but you can actually buy waterproof mp3 players and earphones that work for swimming too which is cool.

I found one that sends vibrations through your skull, and in return you can hear music under water, some kind of new technology, simple amazing.

Thanks in advance.

I just been reading online and found an offical post on apple website with everyone complaining about buying an apple shuffle 3rd gen like me and it braking soon after exercising such as running/jogging or even walking with the slightest bit of sweat. Seems like there's thousands of people in same situation and apple not doing anything to fix it.

Allot of people in that post are suggesting the "Sony W252 Wearable Walkman® MP3 player" which is water resistant and has no wires. Sounds good but going to keep searching and reading reviews.

There is definitely a synergy with music and exercise, I'm significantly more motivated when I'm listening to music I enjoy (the exception being mountain walking, no idea why).

For MP3, I've got the Sansa Clip+ which is fantastic sound quality and small enough to not get in the way, you can clip it to your belt/pocket or if you're being a bit too active you can buy a cheap and cheerful arm strap for it, I have absolutely no complaints about mine at all.

For earphones, well I've not had much luck with sports earphones (the ones with a headband) lasting very long, I've had both Sennheiser and Sony ones as they were touted to put up with abuse but both died pretty quick. These days I just use generic IEMs and a clip to keep it on my collar, that way when I run it only displaces the cable below the clip and they never fall out, it's not the best method but it does the trick.

Another vote for the clip+ lightweight and you can clip where you want, good for gym use.

Take a look at soundmagics's PL30/50's in ears, i've got the PL30's on order atm.

They come with plenty buds to choose from and also come with a rubber over the ear cable guide and croc clip that helps when jogging, apparently they sound good too.

I use an iPod touch (it's water resistant to a point) a Fiio E1 (my speaker stays on since I dropped the iPod in the bath) and boggo earphones. I've been thinking about getting some cans instead but am concerned about getting them sweaty and also them bouncing around on my head.

Generic IEM's 'in ear monitors' are the earphones you get with your ipod/mp3 player, cans is a term used for headphones.

I wouldn't. I'm mostly a headphone user and trying to do anything more than walking with them on is difficult, I've tried with my old NS1000s and they made my head feel like it was 20kg heavier, I haven't even contemplated it with my bigger cans.

Thanks for your replies so far, I've been researching all last night and today online and out of the hundreds of mp3 players I've looked at I think I really want to try the "Sony W252 Wearable Walkman® MP3 player"...out of this type of wearable wireless mp3 players is there any other challengers that you know of?

This mp3 player does really sound perfect for me. I'm only going to use it for cardio, and I only really do cross trainer, some times I walk up hill at a fast pace on tredmill and sometimes I do rowing machine and I think it would be perfect for this.

sansa clip+, great little player, sound quality is good, loud and has 5 band eq, unreal features for such a small device and clip built on to unit, normally have mine clipped on t-shirt neck. Drag and Drop from explorer is nice as well.

Was throw away money too. Have a look here

Philips SHS8000 (earhook-earphones) and sansa clip+ are great.

Cost me £35 for both new of ebay.
You can put the mp3 player in a plastic bag and wear a hat but I've worn mine over the years in poring rain and no trouble.
Ipods are just for mugs with no computer sense.

I couldn't imagine exercising with anything larger than IEMs.

I use an Ipod classic w/arm band and usually the Westone 3 or Sennheiser IE8.
