OK, ok, i know i posted a thread a few weeks ago regarding a 7 seater, but circumstances have changed now, my ex is moving 200 miles away with my eldest son :(, and though i'll still see him, i don't see the need to reduce my options with a 7 seater now, so, i've decided for definite i need to replace my mondeo with something a bit posher, i've narrowed my choices to either a 520/530D and an Audi A6 or something similar sized. I'd like leather and toys (sat nav / bluetooth / premium sound system) and i can spend upto about £10k.

Will either of the above nail it or can anyone recommend an alternative?

£10k 530d? No thanks - you'll just replace the money you spend on fuel with the money you spend fixing stuff. Don't bother. Oh and they'll probably need to recode the car every time you adjust the seat

hence why the 520d is in there, i'm more interested something comfortable than fast these days, so i don't mind the 8.6s 0-62 of the 520d, sure it's only 4 cylinder but i'm not bothered. I don't fancy a jag, well i would have and XF but way out of budget. I imagine a 7 series would be problematic at this budget, 525d - no point, running costs of the 530d with not much more to offer than the 520 - except 2 cylinders. Merc - C class, no thanks. Audi A8 - no thanks, Audi A4 / 3 series - too small. Think i've probably answered my own needs in an A6 or 520D. they tick most of the boxes.

Because I know his tastes.

I need a diesel, i'm driving about 400 miles a week ;). Also, i want something more premium again, the A6 is my first choice but even though i said it was too small, i wouldn't discount the right A4, but i want at least leather, nav and bose (or equivelent), bluetooth would be up high on priorities too. Then, if i'd consider an A4, then it would be unfair to discount a 3 series.

At the end of the day, i want a nice interior and something comfortable, i'm not bothered about fast, but i'd like something quickish, something with good mid-range kick (30-70 or 50-70) for overtaking.

I've recently bought an A4 and you'll struggle to get one with RNS-E (sat nav) and all the rest for 10k. Any that come up will have mega miles on them as the full screen sat nav is one of the things that sees them snapped up quickly. It's much better to go for one with less options, pick one up with less miles on the clock and then retrofit them. There's loads of guys that do it (I think Hazzydays are regarded as the best) and they'll fit and source the parts for you, or you can source them yourself. The only thing that isn't worth retrofitting is the Bose stereo, but it isn't amazing as far as high end systems go. Have you heard the standard A4 concert stereo? It isn't all that bad! All that it needs(being picky) is the front components replacing and amping.

*edit* Plus they'll all be S-Lines which have... interestingly firm suspension.

ST TDCI then. Can pick them up with nav and leather and the rest of the toys. Don't be such a badge snob. You know the Mondeo ST is a great car. ;)

I've had 2 mondeos now, and as much as I like the st's, they are starting to look a bit dated now. Then there's DMF and injector issues with the ST tdci. I just think with the A6, you get so much as standard, it's easily on a par with the ST Tdci, and the 2.7Tdi is as quick. Oh, the mondeo I have now has the touch screen nav Pete!
