Do you beleive in fate and that everything happens for a reason or is everything just plain, blind old luck?

Was just thinking this as me and the missus we're sitting down earlier just chatting about the past. We are engaged now, got a little one on the way and we have our own home but we we're just remembering how we met and it got me thinking that surely, the weird circumstances and how it came about can't just be luck.

Basically I had just started a new job and was supposed to be working in Scotland, worked there for 5 days of what was supposed to be a month but after the 4 days they needed me nearer home so I got to come home. Was knacked after the first few days of a new job and working extra hours because I was away from home and had nothing better to do.

I had organised with a mate to go out for a few beers but didn't really feel up for it. It was my aunties birthday the same night and my family managed to twist my arm into going. Fine, I thought, i'll come along and went along with my mate who was at a loose end. Had no intention of staying out beyond the party as I was working the next day. Got a taxi home and after a lot of persuading my mate got me to our local which was just next to his for one last pint.

We got there, had a couple and as we got up to leave we spotted his now ex missus across the room with her friends. We went over to say hi and, again, was persuaded to stay for one more drink. As we were drinking I noticed her rather cute friend (my now missus) and we got to chatting. Nothing fantastic just a bit of chat and then last orders came, up I got to go and again (theres a theme here :p) after a lot of arm twisting me and my mate agreed to head into town with them. Afterwards I found out the missus had wanted to go home but she was persuaded to come out too.

So we got to town and completely lost them as we had seperate taxis. We had a drink in a random bar and again as we were just about to leave they walked in the same place we were leaving :) So got to chatting to the now missus and well one thing led to another and after a really good night, a bit of dancing and the rest we decided to meet up some time in the future, which we did and the rest is now history.

When I look back at that I just struggle to think how every little thing that happened all the way, like me deciding to go out when not wanting to, getting relocated by work, bumping into them in a bar as we were leaving. I just fail to see how that can all be blind luck, or if it is I wouldn't have minded putting a quid on it :D

So what are everyone elses opinions? Luck or fate? Have you got your own stories which makes you wonder about if its one or the other?

You make your own luck, but only to an extent. i.e. No-one could predict an airplane landing on your house!
Life is full of opportunitys and I agree with the "You have missed many, many potential wives by probably milliseconds" comment above
Anyone can change their life be it for the worse or for the better but it is very hard to break old habits and routines, but that is what you need to do to change.

I don't believe in fate or destiny, to me both suggest something higher at work, which I don't believe in. I do believe in luck or chance or coincidence or whatever you choose to call it.

Every major decision we make in our lives is fated. We don't have the control we like to think we do. People are scared to think it, but they actually have no control over their lives.

Things just happen, many many subtle things have an effect on everything that happens but a greater guiding power is not among them.

I believe in the big bounce theory quite strongly, so it seems to me that fate is an in-deniable trait.

It suggests that there has been an infinite number of sequential universes, that everything has possibly happened before, and it will happen again.

People like to do this a lot like the OP, trace all events that lead up to one single moment and make it sound more than it really is. You can do it with a lot of things.

I don't believe in fate, or luck or that everything is planned out for me.
I'm just incredibly unfortunate in almost everything I do :p

For destiny and fate to exist for you, it must mean that it does for everyone else, which in turn means that everyones lives must be intertwined in some way. For you to be a part of everyone else's destiny means that your actions are predetermined and planned, thus the very notion of choice and free will are are impossible.

Sadly it's pretty impossible to prove either way. If someone has something great happen to them they can think 'Wow, what luck! It must have been fate I was here at exactly the right moment!' Yet if something bad originally happened they would think 'Wow, what luck! Oh well it must be fate because everything happens for a reason amirite?!'

Not forgetting the bigger picture of course, if peoples lives are planned so intricately then they must have been planned by someone or something of unimaginable power. /can of worms
