Help, 6990 hissing loudly - sounds like lack of power

The fan noise aint that bad believe it or not, under 99% load I was getting 82 degrees, the fan sounded like a 5870 between 45 and 50%. Obviously longer sessions the card would prob get hotter but fan I can take.

I don't know if any of you have the Stalker games but with an ATI card (in my experience) when you are on the main menu you get that high pitched squeel/cackle/hiss sound, it's like that sound but twice as loud in every game.

With my other ATI cards though Stalker main menu is the only time I heard this sound excluding when my last PSU was failing and my 4870x2 was squeeling/cackling in Mass effect 2 before shutting down.

Could not try my other PCI slot either due to bad ASUS motherboard v1 design, there is a lot of cables at bottom of the board and the card just would not get in, I was not going to force it.

It can still be your PSU though, I know it powers a 5870 fine but it is really not the same thing in power requirements. Have you got a mate with a 650W PSU you can borrow?

It powered a 4870x2 before the 5870 ok and 12v rail readings I took last night were ok. Unfortunatly the lastest GPU z does not support 6990 VDDC readings yet :(

On the right hand side, below the two power slots.

Ok, I'm a little unfamiliar with the card layout but that sounds like it's near the power circuitry...

There could be a shaking coil there somewhere...

If you have a phone or a mic, would you be able to record the sound? That way I may be able to tell you what is making the noise. You may be able to fix it with something as simply as some hot glue...

try the psu turbo..

for multi-gpu u need to run the psu in turbo mode which puts the psu rails into 1 big rail.

email from Tagan
If you are using one graphics card then figure 2. Should be adequate enough, if you are using SLi GPU’s or crossfire configuration then you can switch it over to figure 1. This shouldn’t shorten the lifespan of the unit; it’s primarily used to integrate 6 x 12v rails into 1 to provide more DC output.

Yeah I could possibly record it using my headset , I am not going fix anything with glue, would rather send it back and get replacement

on the back of the psu

make sure u turn off the psu before switching it

lol, I looked there and no switch, then read the below and found out why, it seems its automatic.

Ah could be a very bad case of capacitor whine, make sure you have vsync enabled and run fraps to confirm your frame rate is capped at your monitors refresh rate.

It's too loud for capacitor whine I think, I always have V sync enabled in everygame and ccertian game I lock at 60fps and the sound was still there.

Have spoken to OC and they going to take it back, i am getting a full refund.

Going too hold off on upgrading for a month or too now. I not sure whether I trust getting dual GPU again on one card after this and the 4870x2 problems I had in the end.

Maybe I will eventually get a 580 and 1080p monitor instead

WHAT? you got a 6990 without a full HD monitor? what res are you using?

Does enabling VSync reduce the noise? You sometimes get nasty feedback noises between the PSU and GFX VRM if the framerate is quite high, which I would imagine it is on that beast!
