Does anyone else do this? I dont, however tonight I came out of work and noticed two what looked like good PC's sitting there by the electrical waste, so I went over had a look, the one PC was a small media sized desktop case which would be perfect for my dead server at home, so I thought I would take it, if the hardware inside didn't work then the case would be great for me as my server is in a ugly looking bulky desktop case.

There was another desktop there aswel, so I grabbed them both chucked them in the car, got them home

The media PC spec is pretty much the same as my server at home bar the hard disks (which I was about to buy a new PSU for because its dead), but I plugged it in, works no problems! AMD Semp 3200+, 512mb ram, 80gb hdd, but the case is nice and small with a small form factor PSU.

Second desktop also works, 3ghz celeron with 512mb ram and 80gb hd, dvd-rw etc so I am thinking of cleaning it up, making sure it all working, no faults, and selling it.

Am I a scavenger now? or is this acceptable form? I honestly dont know why people throw out working hardware unless its really really really really really old that no one can use.

We are in a shared office building (there is two side by side) and its a technology centre, so I am going to keep my eyes out from now on,lol

Most "normal" people wouldn't have a clue how to do that. They're probably also fairly clueless about internet security.

Clearly :p Oh well, fail on his part, meanwhile my server will be rebuilt, I can sell off old parts from my old server, and I can sell the other unit, few beers down the pub, or it will pay for tickets travel lodge booking for a club night I am planning on going to end of April :)

Yours Sincerely

it shocks my how many ppl that thro out there pcs dont destroy there HDD's, ive had some old pcs before and found all sorts of personal details that could be dangerous in the wrong hands

Done this myself. It would amaze me what perfectly good hardware people chuck out because they are under the illusion it is slow and past it. Then again, most people don't want the hassle of Linux distros that will make even an old Duron or Athlon fly. Sadly people benchmark the performance of their machinery on its ability to run the latest Windows release, which is plain daft.

Saves it being dumped I suppose :)

Indeed, many old PC's are in fact being shipped off to China and broken down for raw materials.

I've found a A3 scanner on a skip before now, I couldn't test it as I didn't have a SCSI card, so I used the glass and steppers in another project...
